How can debate improve your relationship with stakeholders?

The reality shows that engaging in well-structured and respectful debate can significantly improve my relationship with stakeholders in several ways. As for stakeholders, debate provides a platform for stakeholders to voice their opinions, concerns, and needs. The debate can spark creativity and generate new ideas from different viewpoints. For me, debating effectively honed my communication and persuasion skills. Also, debating complex issues challenges my assumptions and encourages critical thinking.

One thing I have observed is that for any organisation to advance confidently towards their goal, subjecting the issues, positions, direction to debate is quite important. Debate in this sense, is giving the team an opportunity to look at all the sides and make a case for the decision. The overall aim is not to win but to analyse the rationale behind your position.

There is no delivery without debate but, in order for it to be used to improve relationships with stakeholders, the following elements are crucial: 1. Prepare as much as possible beforehand by understanding the perspectives of your stakeholders. Having a baseline as to where they're coming from will not only help you couch your perspective in terms that resonate but will also demonstrate your respect for your stakeholders. 2. Actively listen throughout the debate. There is no faster way to harm your stakeholder relationship than emerging from a debate with a plan that doesn't reflect their input. 3. Follow up 1:1 with stakeholders after the debate to ensure that there weren't additional points they wanted to make in private.

As a professional who assists with businesses in distress, be it short term or long term, the open forum for discussions as to business strategy and where to invest is a crucial part of the process when motivating stakeholders. It is vital to understand the difficulties being faced and to obtain accurate and truthful information in order to provide the best service possible for my clients. It is also crucial to debate the strategy for testing purposes, in order to ensure any any strategy is realistic and achievable. The debate promotes positive actions and obtains buy-in of stakeholders as to any restructuring or critical actions required to save a business and return it to state where it is a thriving part of the economic landscape.

Consider that the first step to debating with stakeholders is to listen to what they are saying to you and to others. How easy do you make it for stakeholders to tell you their views and what they are thinking? What is being said and perhaps also what’s not being said?

Respect. Listening at all levels. Integrity, Alignment. Clarity. Speak to the purpose and collaborative culture of your organization. And do not look for "common ground". Find what arises between the parties that will generate breakthroughs for both. Break Through to Yes; Unlocking the Possible within a Culture of Collaboration. There is great value in debate and conflict. Mine it for the gold that has been hidden. Go deep and don't avoid debate or conflict. Be true.

One thing that I have found helpful is to highlight your points and canvas your position in clear and concise manner. The essence of engaging with stakeholders is to make them see the rationale behind your proposed business decision. Debate is therefore a communication style and strategy that puts the issue in question on the table, and highlights points supporting a position without derailing and confusing the stakeholders. Target is convincing, and to be able to convince, you need to have researched, tested your analysis, be convinced of your position, then present to stakeholders. Always remember that it is not a battle to win but a clear presentation of your position allowing for contributions and criticism.

Debating with stakeholders has both benefits and disbenefits. Benefits from meaningful two way communication can help everyone understand their respective positions, even if they don’t agree with them. Stakeholders may also be able to come up with valuable ideas and solutions to problems which may not otherwise have been identified. Disbenefits can occur as debate potentially raises the level of expectation. For example, stakeholders may feel that they have valid views which are then not taken into account.

Debate is about convincing others to buy on your disagreement. For me, it is about workplace tolerancy. A favour in oweing is one of the key wisdom to help us cope with the conflict if any. It was once a marketing language for someone who possess a marketing or PR experiences when proposing a collaboration or tactical acquisition. I have had to incorporate debate into my team many times as a leader. It gives my team members the opportunity to present their views without any form of constraint. Thus, any position being presented to the stakeholders had first been constructively debated at my departmental level to ensure we have sounded ideas, concerns, among ourselves. It has never been my style to impose without scrutinising a position within available time frame. This had greatly help the department excuse good judgment.
