How can data visualization professionals learn from their mistakes to become more resilient?

When I took my first programming course my first program was 54 lines long & had over 200 compiler errors. My TA recommended dropping the class & finding a new major. We all make mistakes; it is how we react to them that makes a difference. I could have quit, but I decided to learn from those mistakes and made the program work. I became the most popular student since no matter what compiler error my classmates ran into, I had already seen it & fixed it. Fast forward to my first job as a consultant, we had a to write a program before we went off to our training classes before we could go out on a project. The only time in my life the program had no errors & ran accurately on the 1st run. Learn & share your mistakes, a path for success.

The very first step to understand and solve any problem is to acknowledge it. It is always recommended to have an objective view of yourself and your work and try to criticise yourself, hence, asking other professionals to help can be very beneficial. It is always worth knowing that your analysis and visualisation can always get better and experience plays a vital role in this journey.

I’m not sure I would call this accept your mistake but more actively listen for feedback. Accept different opinions and perspectives.

Learning from your mistakes is key to success and growth in your role. You want to be known as someone who can be trusted and relied on to provide accurate and timely information.

Mentoring is the favorite part of my role. When I first started in this field almost 20 years ago, it was in its infancy and I did not have a mentor I could reach out to for guidance. If I can provide that guidance today for the next generation of developers to help them progress in their career faster than I have done what I set out to do.

One big mistake in showing data is trying too hard to make it look impressive. People sometimes use fancy charts and complicated visuals even when they're not necessary. This goes against the main goal of visualization, which is to easily share information. When it comes to bad visualization, keeping things simple is better. Fancy decorations can actually make it harder for people to understand the data.

I firmly believe that learning storytelling effectiveness is of prime importance in Data Visualization. If a data-driven story fails to resonate with the audience, data viz professionals should learn from the narrative shortcomings. For instance, a marketing team using data visualizations to tell a brand's success story may realize the need for a more compelling and relatable narrative.
