How can data inform the ideation phase of your CPS process?

Data is often likened to the new oil, yet those who are immersed in it might disagree. It can be disorganized, contradictory, and, most crucially, of little utility. Therefore, during the ideation process, it's essential to identify the ultimate goal—the 'North Star'—and then strategise backwards from there in terms of what forms of data will be useful or interesting, how may we procure them and what existing channels of access do we have to achieve statistical significance if we are doing opinion polls or survey for instance. Data and its insights can be customised so thinking about what would give you the most unadulterated format of insight possible. This would be without our confirmation biases coming in the way :)

Similarly, open-ended questions can be likened to exploring a new engineering problem; they allow for a depth of understanding that predefined answers cannot provide. Surveys, on the other hand, are like executing a well-practiced game plan, efficiently gathering data from a broad audience. Lastly, experiments in data collection remind me of testing a new civil engineering material; by manipulating certain variables, we can observe changes in performance, leading to innovative solutions.
