How can critical reading skills be integrated into other subjects?

There are five Critical reading skills that are important in helping students to be proficient readers. They are as follows: Phonological-awareness. Phonics. Fluency. Vocabulary. Comprehension. These skills help students in analyzing, interpreting and, sometimes, evaluating as they are reading. Along with the five skills, critical thinking skills QUESTIONS both the text and our own reading of it.

These skills are transferable across various disciplines and are valuable in navigating the complexities of the information-rich world we live in.

As a homeschool educator, I incorporate the Charlotte Mason methodology. Critical reading skills are seamlessly woven into subjects through living books, rich literature, and narrations. I engage students with well-crafted texts related to different subjects, encouraging them to narrate and analyze, fostering critical thinking across the curriculum.

One of the best tools I've come across in recent years is 3 Close Reads through the OER Project. The practice is similar to one that many elementary teachers will recognize, but it is deeper than I was taught in my regular professional development. Read 1 is a skim/scan to get the 'gist'. Read 2 is deeper and slower, annotating and thinking as one progresses. Read 3 is more introspective. Students really make meaning from the repetition and the deeper thinking.

As a math teacher, I'm a firm believer that every teacher is a literacy teacher, regardless of what subject they teach. In my class, my students spend a good amount of time engaging with word problems. When reviewing word problems with students, I'm pushing them to annotate key details within the problems, identify key words that signify specific operations (ex. sum = addition, difference = subtraction, etc.), determining the meaning of given values based on the context of the problem, etc. In the end, anytime students demonstrate the ability to be critical readers of math word problems, they're also shifting their understanding of math concepts from the procedural stage all the way through to the conceptual and application stages.

Critical reading is an essential skill for mathematics and for all real-life application questions we depend on the student's ability to draw comparisons, sift through information and critically analyse the data given to be able to formulate a mathematical question they can solve

One way that I've integrated critical reading into my 7-12 science classrooms has been giving students a reading selection and having them create the main idea and study guide. Empowering kids to choose which content is most important to them is a simple, yet powerful, way to build engagement and autonomy. They work individually to extract the main idea, supporting facts, key vocabulary then collaborate to come to a consensus. This process also provides experience with argumentation skills such as claim, evidence, and reasoning. Student buy-in is immediate when they feel as though they are in control of their learning and I have the opportunity to evaluate several skills all at once.

Integrating science and literacy helps students become better scientists and better readers. Predicting, supporting with evidence, comparing and contrasting, drawing conclusions… these are all skills we use in science and reading.

In science, I would add one more idea for learning anything science. That would be to draw it, with as much detail that would help with understanding.

I use critical reading in geography to teach perspective. We will read a text like a news article or section of a book. I'll ask the students to determine how many different perspectives are given in the text. We will often then try to identify other perspectives not given in the text based on the information available. My goal through all of this is to help them question the purpose of the texts they read and identify how people in different positions could view the same event or topic differently. This will serve them in the future to be less taken in by one sided arguments and allow them to empathize with other perspectives.

Critical literacy helps students understand the world and how people see and interact with the world. It is about having the skills and desire to evaluate society and the world. Wolk(2003)states”It is especially focused on issues of power: Who has it and who is denied it; how it is used and how it is abused. More specifically, it often revolves around issues of race, culture, class, gender, media, and the environment in the hope of creating a more just, humane, democratic, and equal world. By teaching for critical literacy, teachers help their students to see and question the dominant power themes in society and the world, such as racism, sexism, and the effects on the environment of individuals and systems.”

Integrating critical literacy into art, makes literacy come alive for all students. Millman(2009) stated that “by recognizing art as a cultural nar- rative while using a critical literacy framework, teachers can help students develop an understanding of social and cultural meaning in art, and can pro- vide students with the tools to under- stand their culture and history and a means to work towards social justice.”

Vocabulary is also very important when using these skills in art. Understanding the words to use when critiquing and when creating their own art is valuable to the artist. Attitude towards one’s own art makes a difference when describing other art.

Integrating critical reading skills in art involves analysing art criticism, artist statements, and art history texts. Explore exhibition catalogs, art journals, and magazines for diverse perspectives. Attend artist talks, compare artworks, and reflect on personal responses. Use visual annotations for hands-on engagement. Participate in group discussions to foster collaborative dialogue. This multidimensional approach enriches art appreciation and contributes to a nuanced understanding of visual culture

Educators need to stop thinking of literacy and reading skills as an English or Literacy teacher problem but rather a skill we can all contribute to equip our students with.

Critical reading skills are exactly what they say…Critical. Every subject involves critical reading skills. Vocabulary is a struggle with most of our students so incorporating vocabulary in every subject every day is how we can improve. Posting word walls, dead word walls, higher order question word walls and descriptive word walls for students to refer to and for us as educators to refer to will enhance some of the critical reading skills and encourage deeper understanding.
