How can corpus linguistics inform your ESL teaching practice?

In my own experience, I used corpus linguistics to help my ESL students understand the nuances of English phrasal verbs. By analyzing a corpus, I found that certain phrasal verbs were more commonly used in informal speech, while others were more prevalent in written language. This insight allowed me to tailor my teaching materials to address these differences, leading to more effective learning outcomes for my students.

Students frequently have problems with collocations for a number of reasons; the most common being direct translations from their native tongue. An example I come across regularly while teaching in Spain is problems with do/make collocations due to the fact that, in Spanish, the verb ‘hacer’ is used for both. However, if you were to ask anyone teaching English as a foreign language, the most common mistake they hear while teaching Spanish speakers, I’d bet my house it’d be this one: ‘I have sixteen years old.’ Even though use of the verb ‘to be’ when referring to age is standard English stuff, you’ll find students up to proficiency level still have the odd lapse with this particular collocation.

Corpus linguistics offers valuable tools for ESL teachers to improve their practice and facilitate more effective language learning. It can benefit ESL teaching in multiple ways. In my experience, the most important benefit is helping teachers understand word frequency and collocation, which assists ESL teachers in creating authentic learning materials.

It's an important way of giving learners the chance to improve their comprehension of spoken language as they go out into the English-speaking world, and also to equip them with with vocabulary, collocations, and idioms they can use to express themselves fully.

In my experience, Corpus linguists can be used in grammatical patterns and variations in several ways: 1. Identifying common patterns 2. Examining variations 3. Investigating collocations 4. Some grammatical rules or structures can be taught easier when using corpus linguistics. We can use some different tools to help us and thus we can also use different types of assessment.

One thing I found useful is that to teaching ESL can be best achieved through Corpus education because speaking's foundations are in literature. Writing and reading plays an important role in learning so I second this opinion that learning grammatical patterns is only possible through this.

This allows you to focus on high-frequency examples of usage that not only better prepare learners for the use cases they'll likely encounter but are also more likely to be reinforced by input they come into contact with regularly. We might think we know how to best use a word or phrase, but corpus data can prove our hunches wrong or even outdated. This is especially true when working with teaching foreign languages for special purposes, such as a specific field of study.

Large volumes of real English text from a variety of sources, including books, emails, news stories, and conversation transcripts, are accessible through corpora. Instead of depending only on textbooks or idealised scenarios, you may use this to introduce your pupils to the actual usage of English in everyday circumstances.

From my perspective, targeted instruction is a key component in ESL teaching. I mainly focus on analyzing frequent errors that have been made by my students, and based on this data analysis, I can improve the learning efficiency of my students. In addition to that, that approach saves time by preventing us from wasting our resources on irrelevant topics.

Focusing on the student's individualized learning can provide better guidance and support for teachers, to help identify and rectify common errors; this allows ESL learners to gain a deeper understanding of the language, it also helps to identify the patterns of grammatical errors and the incorrect word usage that the students might have.

One thing I have found helpful with my students is organising workshops to help create more awareness about corpus linguistics. In classroom teaching as well, students need to be given enough autonomy to learn corpus linguistics on their own, through peer learning as well. While teaching poetry, taking out 15-20 minutes to engage with this spectrum of ESL is significant.

One thing I have found useful is leveraging research and critical thinking. These skills are already present in students and as teachers, it is up to us to make the most use of them. Here is how you can go about it: Corpus tools and research skills: I taught students basic corpus tools (concordance lines, keyword searches) to independently explore language questions and investigate their own vocabulary and grammar use. Using corpus linguistics can help our learners be more confident and be ready to get engaged easily . We can improve their skills in different and simple ways.

Promoting learner's critical thinking, have them evaluate language patterns, common mistakes, and phrases in authentic texts; by encouraging the use of tools where they can take control and have more autonomy of their language learning journeys; can help them gain confidence in their ability to learn independently and also making informed language choices beyond the classroom.

I once had a classmate openly complain she couldn't understand Shakespeare. Our professor smirked. He then asked her, "Can you read?" She nodded. "Well..." he said, "you can learn anything with 'attentive reading.' " Because writing is nothing but thinking on paper, whenever we read — another person thinks for us. This age-old practice of repeating an author's mental process reveals the true benefit of corpus linguistics. "Practice" is the key. Remember, repetition is the father of learning. And so, the more students are exposed to content that reflects having a strong command of the English language, the more fluent students become. In short, as my professor noted, humans can learn anything with sustained "attentive reading."

I find that Corpus Linguistics is the thing that bails you out the most as a teacher. As an ESL teacher, I often get students who are well below the required level for whatever grade I'm teaching, and while slower strategies such as recommending reading and practice of writing do help these students; the most impactful way I've been able to quickly help them catch up with their peers is through curating a word list of frequently needed words and having them quickly aquire these. This makes them very quickly able to comprehend class material, automatically letting them slowly integrate into the regular class practice.

How many times have i seen students with a great talent in reading and writing a new language, yet lack the confidence in the speech arena... Using focused core language skills built through effective corpus linguistic methods and providing the students with common and core words and sentences whilst equally empowering them with verbal practice will strengthen the teaching greatly.
