How can IT Consultants network outside of their company?

I would recommend joining r/msp or r/sysadmin. Some good community groups can be TechTribe or even the MSPGeek discord group. These are tailored for MSPs but IT consultants should be able to fit right in.

Another excellent way to broaden your network outside of your company is by attending industry-related events. Conferences, workshops, and seminars are fantastic venues to meet like-minded individuals and industry leaders. They provide opportunities to learn about the latest trends, developments, and innovations in the IT field. Plus, they often feature networking sessions where you can meet and engage with other attendees. Remember to bring your business cards and prepare an 'elevator pitch' about your work and interests. You never know when you might encounter a potential collaborator, mentor, or even future employer!

The IT community is an amazing, collegial community that helps others and teaches others. There are so many incredible industry groups, peer groups, channels, communities, etc. that foster dialogue and support one another. While there are plenty of online communities available and there is so much of events happenning currently my 2 cents on joining online communities are - Exercise caution on not spreading yourself too thin by participating in a large number of communities. Instead clearly identify an interest area which contributes to your aspirational goals and participate in those. It is important to prioritize quality over quantity. - Second most important aspect is to contribute and not just be a receiver of the information. Networking in any community is more rewarding when you contribute and give. Active participation is key to success.

Events and webinars have higher influence than all other mediums. An example I can witness with, 1. BNI: a platform which I witnessed as an effective way of networking. Every chapter has diversified business who comes with decades of experience and industry knowledge. They have a continuous learning practice to enhance their business. 2. CII: Another platform where they involve and bridge the budding entrepreneurs and established business people. 3. Webinars: LinkedIn has recently brought the feature hosting live events, this made so many Domain expertise to host the event which makes the platform for every users to choose their interest based.

I would recommend attending vendor sponsored events such as DattoCon or even events like Cybercon or CyberUK. In-person events are usually better for making connections.

Attending events and webinars will always my first top priority choice among others. During the event, you will have time to network with peer fellas and have a good in-person catchup. Sometimes, that's only way to make them remember you.

Notably, in Nigeria, the flourishing Web 3 communities actively host onsite events, while even the Federal Government is engaging in the NITDA Nigeria event, indicative of the growing importance and opportunities within the IT sector

Creating and sharing contents are also a great way to get noticed. But as with the current phase of information explosion powered by a myriad of blogging platforms and generative content creation, I believe that unless you have something to share that can stand out in the large haystack of related contents, it is very much possible that your content might get lost in the internet. You also need to ensure that your content is genuinely yours and you have made sure to remove any signs of plagiarism from your content. Hence I feel that this is the hardest way compared to networking via Online Communities and Events/Webinars. Finally promoting your content will require a considerable effort. Nevertheless, it is surely a path to get noticed.

To date, I've successfully built my audience by consistently generating valuable content. This approach has proven effective in attracting an engaged audience that resonates with my message and expertise.

I initiated my career journey as a dedicated volunteer and intern, finding it to be an expeditious path towards advancement in any chosen field. Selecting a mentor and offering assistance through small tasks can significantly accelerate your professional growth, enabling you to navigate past potential pitfalls and benefit from your mentor's experience.

Volunteering and mentoring also provide opportunities for skill development, allowing consultants to improve and broaden their knowledge. Aside from the personal satisfaction that comes from helping others, these activities can result in valuable relationships, new perspectives, and a stronger network, making them a rewarding and mutually beneficial networking strategy for IT consultants.

Keeping in touch with recruiters helps as well. The more we know about your job journey is information that we can use to help you further your career. Having a strong relationship with a recruiter in your field can help you navigate companies that are hiring and different market trends that you might see.

Keeping in touch not only allows for open lines of communication, but also for the exchange of ideas, collaboration on future projects, and the possibility of referrals or partnerships. Consistent and genuine follow-up assists consultants in developing a strong network that can provide long-term support as well as contribute to their professional growth and success.

Don’t forget peer groups. They are invaluable in giving owners a safe place to open up and share when it gets lonely at the top, but they also provide education and accountability.
