Many of the design and construction issues are caused by rushing the process. Archt. need more time allocated for design to reduce errors and gaps. The process needs to be long enough for contractors to get most of the questions answered and disbursed to bidders. Clarity allows for more accurate estimates and less contingencies. I remember a time when we had drawings and bids with less contingencies, fewer change requests.

What happened to "Drafting" skills. Reliance on software designs tools to do everything is, at times, creating compliancy in the work drawing presentation. Take the time to print out the drawing and actually review your work, and have others review it, before sending it out to a client. Mundane, trival errors creates doubt in the quality of the work being provided.

When I started my career, the old engineers always told us to cover aspects of the construction process with vague notes on the drawings. I have actually seen notes like "wrap tight, weld securely". We always were careful to avoid dictating contractor "means and methods" by stating those are determined by the srector. Working together is powerful so having the engineer meet with the contractor to explain the intent and the contractor to explain the means and methods to accomplish the design will result in overall success. And that is constructability review with operation team.. Before issuing final AFC drawings it is always recommanded to have a session to review all deliverables with operation and maintenance team.... Also step by step model review and tag closure activities will also help to avoid major rework during construction.. Also in case of brown field projects its always better to ensure to have latest site information about the exisitng underground and aboveground facikities....
