On sell side, especially for global bank and prime broker serving institutional clients, Cross Product Margining should be considered as a critical aspect of Collateral Management. It’s not only for effectively lowering client’s overall margin requirement and funding cost so to boost sales, but also for the bank to have holistic and realistic timely exposure monitoring on client counterparty risk. It also effectively help preventing client from arbitraging among bank’s global areas on different business relationships and deals, which is another sort of Counterparty Risk.

Liquidity Management is certainly a more important aspect of Collateral Management nowadays, especially for sell side banks. It went beyond Credit Enhancement (e.g. collateral swap and credit sponsor), Collateral Rehypothecation and Cash Flow Management, up to more sophisticated duration matches from Asset and Liability Management perspective. Dynamic and computerized effective Duration Management is especially important to Insurance businesses on buy side as well.
