How can Civil Engineers prevent conflicts with clients?

Most important thing is to fully understand client needs, and also maintain positive communication with client, ensure clear communication, demonstrate expertise, dealing with issues and disputes. one thing more helpful is to build long term relationships with client.

In an Indian scenario, Civil/Structural engineers maynot be engaged by the Clients directly, it's always through an Architect or PMC or these days through EPC contractors for large projects. It's difficult to avoid conflicts where Clients do not understand or appreciate or work to close Architectural drawings first before pressurising you into delivering Analysis, design and GFCs. Problem is seriously aggravated when there is institutional proof checking It's therefore best to go as follows:- 1.Look for direct appointment with the Client 2. Do not commit to any % savings on tender,if working under a EPC contractor 3.Do not start your work unless Architectural drawings are approved by the Client 4.All revisions to be payable contractually

in my experience you have to underhand first what client need and his expectation. effective communication with site team and client as well and the must important think is credibility with client an all project team as well.

I agree with the statement issued to understand the client’s need for the fulfilment of requirements on actual basis to maintain the free flow of work with in timeline as per PTS, all discussions are required to be held prior stating and planning of execution work.

In my experience, no matter how is communication is great between civil engineers and the client, when a conflict surfaces, the base that the conversations and negotiations will be built on is the contract and that is why it is extremely important to create a solid contract with a clear clauses that can protect both sides.

One trait I have found very useful with my client is discipline. Be discipline enough to keep to the terms and conditions of the contract. Keep to deadlines and communicate constructively. Document every communication between you and clients to avoid misunderstandings.

Based on my experience, it is very important to refer to all the details, including technical, legal, commercial, and appearance features, in all the clauses and documents of the contract and its annexes. I remember that in a project in the south of Iran, due to the relocation of only a few words in one of the contract clauses, we were involved for months in proving the nature of the work in that field, and a lot of energy and cost was wasted for this reason. Therefore, it is essential to obtain a consensus on the issue from all the stakeholders and ensure their alignment with the project objectives. Do not proceed with any actions without prior authorization.
