This is a very sensitive part of camera composition. I did a camera animation recently featuring a scene with floating gallons on a wavy sea body. To sell the motion of inclusiveness, I had to parent the motion of the camera to the unstable water surface as the wave flows. This additional motion was used to make the viewer feel in the scene and underwater as the camera dives underwater due to this wavy motion. So, yes! Camera movements do a lot of story telling too.

What tips work best for you will depend on your production: Are you working in television animation? Time is valuable, so you'll usually be provided a storyboard to adhere to, and may often be using grids to better align the focus of your shots over cuts. Are you working on a feature production? Here you may be given time to explore ideas and sets for you to experiment with what works best for the given sequence. Discuss with your team and superiors what tips would work best for your production.

A very interesting trick to learn how to tell stories with the camera in animation is to consider that the reality of animated cinema is live-action cinema and not the real world. A good way to study the sensation and narrative that certain camera movements usually evoke in the viewer is to literally study this theory applied to cinema and cinema classics. From the angles, to the lenses and the movement.

Depending on your production you may be asked to create a basic light that can present the 'idea' of what the final lighting will look like (this is especially useful with candles, fire, or 'magical aura' effects). Your placeholder lighting will help guide your choices in how best to position the camera so the emotion asked for in the shot will hit harder.
