Most of the Defects detected internally or post production is purely due to poor test coverage and this is primarily due to the fact that we are not fully aware of what we are Developing, what we are testing :) , on top of it are actually having right requirements that is agreed and accepted with business .. primarily cause of bug leakage happens here.. coming back to the role of automation in defects prevention and triage , definitely it helps to improve test coverage and stop repetition of bugs . That’s my view.

Test automation is a key enabler for continuous improvement in a software team, as it allows its parts (both test, dev and product) to reflect on the way they implement requirements, the level of quality required, and the way they interact together to make sure the product is ready for production (verification, validation). As end-to-end test also have a strong behavioral component, its liberate QA engineers to focus on exploratory testing. This helps the team to think and focus on user experience, journey and behavior, and thus think the solution more globally and not just apply strictly requirements as is.
