How can authenticity improve your vision for thought leadership?

In my early days of being an executive leader I believed that being the tough boss would gain the respect of others ... I am so sorry this happened and I openly apologize to anyone who worked with me then. Today my core guiding posts are empathy, compassion and kindness , yes I am reformed. Don't be ashamed of being kind to others, it does not mean people can get away with anything because you are a softy, but brave enough to be kind to others is a major strength. Do this constantly , be relatable and reliable. Earn their trust, yes, earn it and work hard to keep it. You will soon find that you have become the kind of leader that others would love to follow.

In a world where generative AI is commoditising knowledge, authenticity is becoming more critical than ever. Your unique experiences and perspective give context to the thought leadership you present, positioning you as a thought leader in the human context. By adding authenticity to your thought leadership, you can connect with your audience, build trust, and establish yourself as a leader in your field. In my experience, authenticity plays a crucial role in establishing and nurturing thought leadership. Being authentic means staying true to oneself, not merely copying others but instead contributing original insights and perspectives. For instance, sharing a unique approach to solving a common problem can demonstrate the value of authenticity. Whenever I'm given the opportunity to present to a group, I make it a point to try and be my best self. This does not mean that I've got to show people I'm the smartest one in the room nor does it mean that I've got to be the funniest. But, it does mean that I have to connect with the audience, engage them and make them think seriously about the topic. We can only do this when we are genuine, open, and transparent. People do not need to agree with us, but they should walk away with the impression that we showed them our true self.

What you feel, think, say, and do must be one and the same, but is it always? How often have you found yourself veering from this path for the sake of expediency or approval? Thankfully, I've been part of some incredible teams and transparency has always been a crucial component. But, it hasn't always been well defined. To me, transparency is: 1. Confirming the normal…so that everyone knows how the fight is going. 2. Communicating risk…so the team can address it early. 3. Embracing friction and conflict…so that unspoken drama and gossip doesn’t impact relationships. Transparency is not a default state and it doesn’t happen by accident. It must be cultivated.

When you're open about your sources and methods, you not only show respect for your audience's ability to make informed decisions but also reinforce the integrity of your message. Transparency creates trust, and without trust, there is no leadership. I don't have to like you, I don't always have to agree with you, but I do need to trust you.

Everyone has an ego that is both their ally and their enemy. On the one hand, our egos give us the confidence to tackle challenging tasks and make difficult decisions. But, on the other hand, our egos can also tell us what we are not capable of doing and preventing us from achieving some of our greatest potential. It's essential for growth and development that we recognize when these feelings are coming up, so that we can challenge them rather than letting them rule us. Being mindful of how your ego might be holding you back can help develop your self-awareness which leads to incredibly rewarding growth, open new opportunities and foster positive relationships with others.

During high times and low times, remind yourself that 'this too shall pass'. This is the great antidote to getting carried away.

The quick answer always seem to come down to trust. People trust you, they dig what you have to say, they follow you, they buy what you're selling. Ergo your vision becomes their adopted lens to see the world. Of course a vision for the world or on a smaller scale, a marketplace, can be compromised with poor acuity and then everyone sees through fogged-up glasses. Except for those who place trust in someone else. I guess this is what choice is all about. Whom do you trust most?
