The good thing about attending a career fair is you have an overall idea about the industry demanded skills. For example, once I talked to one guy from ASML and he was saying that they are looking for material scientist who at least have some sort of image analysis experience so that s/he can work with a team to develop an ML algorithm for defect detection. After that I started to learn the basics so that I can at least be a part of an interdisciplinary team. Regarding networking, obviously you have the opportunity to talk with industry people who might follow up with your resume once you submit it.
