How can OR applications improve hospital operations?

The problem with using OR (or other tools) to achieve desired metrics is if the underlying incentives aren’t aligned with the health of the public or the environment for healthcare workers, these “improvements” are only going to make healthcare worse while satisfying the criteria. I’m sure it’s an effective tool, but we HAVE to treat the base problem without getting distracted by shiny things. That includes AI :).

The healthcare sector predominantly deal into the delivery of the haltcare. The delivery of health care is a service offering. In case of service offering the experience component over powers the tangible product component. The OR applications may offer the benifit of designing service blueprints. That would help organizations in offering the service experience expected or desired by customers.

I have found this helpful. OR is used to develop predictive models for diagnostic tests, helping assess the likelihood of diseases based on various parameters.

I feel that OR applications are am extremely helpful tool, but just a tool. Adding OR to current productivity policies is helpful, but I don't feel OR is at the point where we can solely rely on it.

i think we should firstly understand that different countries have different health systems. In England and Israel, for example, citizens must have social security and health insurances where in the USA they don't. lets don't neglect this from OR algo decision-making.

I agree that there are several risks involved with using OR applications. I feel that as long as we continue to use this as a tool and train staff on how to handle certain data and applications, it will remain useful. We, as healthcare professionals, need to really do our research on the OR application and make sure that we feel all parties involved with the application is ethical. If we feel that something is not ethical, we must bring this up to the creators of the applications.

when we expect to use OR for medical decision making, the case of low data availability may be crucial, since if we are used to making decisions based on OR, we might neglect certainty of the decision we get.

In my experience OR application developers are extremely responsive to feedback. The stakeholders, providers and clinics need to keep an open line of communication and keep a conversation going on how we can continue to use OR applications as an asset and not allow it become a hinderance to our practices.

I feel like this can be extremely helpful as long as we don't over automate our entire healthcare system. We need to allow for our staff to be able to submit helpful input on how these applications affect patients and workflow in the 'real world'. In testing, OR applications are extremely successful, however once the human experience is taken into play, it changes the experience. We need to make sure that this isn't causing more stress to our staff, due to automation of how we handle the flow of patients.

i would suggest OR would collects data and also use it to predict possible "outcomes" of patient flow. e.g., performing test of type "A" may lead to perming test of type "B" in 85% of the times, or getting result "x" on any test would imply hospitalization in 60% of the cases.
