How can animation and video editing teams work together to achieve the same style and tone?

In my experience with Roadside Romeo a Disney+YRF film production as an Executive Producer , it was imperative that I mapped a clear and shared vision of what we wanted to achieve. We discussed altered ,adapted, tied our target audience, measured and set mood of content feature. We set the style and tone that best suited or accommodated them. Various tools such as mood boards, reference videos, storyboards or scripts to communicate ideas to demonstrate the palette expectations were derived from these . At the helm please define roles , responsibilities scope , timeline , schedules of the project with each hierarchical structure of the teams .

If I tell you I'm picturing a piece of fruit with tentacles, how does that look? Now, ask your mate. Our visualizations are based on a matrix of impressions from our lives. So everybody will picture this in their own way. When communicating a vision, make sure to work with leading concept art, a style guide, or appoint a point of control (art director) that governs the overall vision. When two creatives start butting heads about which creative outputs are "better," we have to admit again that art is subjective. Art Director saves the day ;)

Not only is it important to establish a mutual, shared vision of the desired outcome, but it is vital to find the proper way of commuicating in the team - using the right tools, having a clear project team structure and hierarchy can make all the difference.

Lead should be very active and fast to show the correct way of posing and timing of the style is in really need and enhance the ideas wherever it comes out from the team

Familiarise yourself with the pros and cons of multiple types of software. They all have their own specialties and will offer unique possibilities to the project when adopted. Not being informed about this will eventually limit your creative output.

Choose software tools that work together seamlessly to avoid bottlenecks. Make sure that animation and editing software are compatible to allow for smooth asset transitions. Embrace technology as an enabler rather than a hindrance, breaking free from limitations.

There is a mantra in the guild of video editing and animation professionals - "don't let tools define your workflow" - and, while i tend to agree with that, i think it is important to find the right combination of tools and software that is best suited for the task at hand, and also for the collaboration between the teams and artists involved. Especially if the project team is not already "grooved in" and has taken on some projects before, it will be helpful to discuss tool usage and workflows before diving into the project.

One thing I find useful is to check the compatibilty of my computer with the software that has been chisen for a given project, sometimes, it is necessary to update drivers or request equipment that can facilitate the excecution of activities, especially when working remotely with people from different countries.

Bid farewell to cumbersome processes. Establish an agile workflow that streamlines the collaboration between animation and editing teams. Embrace flexibility, encourage feedback loops, and let innovation dictate your workflow. A dynamic process leads to dynamic results.

If the briefing provides the right (measurable) input, it's already on paper somewhere. Just make sure to review the same way with every project phase. Does the created work check off the briefed requirements and stylistic decisions? Great! If not, you will be able to refer to the points in the briefing to get things back in line.

It helps to outline the process and communication chart before diving into the project - especially for fresh teams, that have not taken on projects before, it is important the the process is discussed before taking off: that way you can ensure that the most important roles in the process have had a chance to make suggestions or provide feedback. In my opinion, there is no standardized default process that can be seamlessly adapted to any project - each project comes with unique challenges and, while there are some best practises, needs to be handled like a blank piece of paper.

Ask a lot of 'why' questions in the process. If you can't answer them, a stylistic choice is often based on nothing and can be deleted without any consequences to the core of the creation. In the stylistic process, make sure to determine why you use certain types of movement, shapes, and colors. This way, the choices are based on overarching themes, which makes it easier to translate to other creation methods like video and editing. Suddenly, it will make sense why you use low angles, slow dolly effects, and symmetry in both animation and editing.

Create a cohesive visual identity that carries through animation and editing. Coordinate aesthetics, from color grading to typography. Establish a symbiotic relationship between visual elements to ensure a seamless and visually striking narrative. Combine artistry with precision for a unique aesthetic experience.

In my opinion and experience, it is important to establish the overall aesthetics and the "look and feel" of a video and animation projects beforehand - this is something that a "Creative Director" should have the responsibility for. While there are subjective opinions and stylistic choices that make each Artist's work unique, often projects need to have a precisely targeted design strategy that often aligns with other elements of the brand or project - thus it is important to make sure that the style matches both that and the client expectations.

Can't stretch enough that what you put in should be measurable when it comes back out of the process. If you agree on a style, theme, or method of creation, break it down and make it measurable in order to refer back to it in the review process. Making it hard to argue with your own decisions will often improve your work. (And yes, you can still stay open and flexible in the process if you implement this).

Disruptive collaboration thrives on continual improvement. Regularly review work-in-progress, seek constructive criticism, and embrace the power of iteration. The path to excellence is paved with ongoing refinement. Improvement is not just a phase; it's a mindset.

Depending on the project and schedule, it is always helpful to plan for internal reviews and feedback before relaying anything to the client - for that, it is also important to establish who in the team is responsible for what element of the production, so feedback can be targeted precisely and handled by the right people. In my experience, it is vital to have a proper means of giving feedback - such as a tool that offers timecode-based commentary that can be located directly in the video - that way you leave less room for errors and misunderstanding and can streamline the review process both internally and with the client.

Explore uncharted collaboration territories. Consider cross-training team members, invest in cutting-edge tools, and break down department silos. Foster an environment that encourages risk-taking and experimentation. The road to disruption is paved with bold choices.
