One thing I love using it for is planning photo shoots. Instead of searching through scrap, I can give a pretty good idea of the casting, styling, location and even lighting. Sitting with clients to talk through the vision, it’s easy to show what variations would do to the shot with a few changes to a prompt. Generative AI is an amazing tool that’s best used with real human creativity.

To put it in very simple terms AI image generation allows you leveraging Artificial Intelligence technology to generate images based on your input. Your input can simply be describing what kind of image you want or providing the kind of image you want to generate, while including additional descriptions for AI to generate a similar image that matches your idea.

Creativity is, from the soft or human skills, the most sought after across industries for a reason. It is the one that can connect the rest of disciplines to generate something, new, original, creative. However, it is also the most abstract and intangible. Generative AI is here to change that. Before Gen AI only professionals with visualization / design / illustration skills would materialize creative thinking into something shareable, understood and felt by anyone. Gen AI and image generation in particular will allow just any individual to make their creativr thinking tangible and shareable, through natural language. Image generation with Gen AI will not substitute creatives. It will empower them and democratize creativity.

Simply, you can create images based on some initial input. For example, the input can be text - you describe what you want - or an image, and AI will generate a new image or set of new images for you, based on the input.

If I were a stock image company, I'd be very nervous right now. AI image generators are eating Shutterstock and co's lunch. The uses cases are clear, from expediting the production of mockup images and ad campaigns in creative services to democratising photo editing for the masses. But copyright issues remain and the short term viability of AI generated images for commercial use is a grey area - particularly with AI legislation splintering across different geographies.

The objective of that process is to adjust the parameters / weights of the model to the most optimum values comparing the neural network output versus a reference result using backpropagation / gradient descent algorithms.

This is a completely new way to create. Think about photography and the influence it has in our lives today. AI Image Generation is a fairly new tool, which is able to create a graphic through a prompt entered by the user, which represents as closely as possible what the user has requested. Such an AI is trained on image data and can therefore only generate something similar to what it has already seen. Therefore, a high unconscious bias is to be expected here. In particular, images with occupational groups, for example, are subject to an enormous (almost 100%) bias. Thus, even the most modern image generation AIs like Midjourney generate exclusively men at the prompt "picture of a doctor".

Some challenges which are necessary to be mitigated are intentional or unintentional use of copyrighted materials while training/generating images, leading to legal complications and potential privacy violations. Similarly, AI systems are trained on datasets, and if these datasets are biased, the AI system could inadvertently perpetuate these biases which need to addressed. Lastly, AI do not inherently understand the concept of harmful or inappropriate content. If not properly monitored, they might generate content that could be used for malicious purposes, such as spreading propaganda or misinformation.

One of the challenges of AI-generated images is their explicability. We need a common code to mark AI-generated images as such, so that anyone can easily check whether the image was generated by AI or not. Of course this will imply education and critical thinking as part of our individual responsibility (just as with previous technological revolutions). But it is key to also have transparency in Generative AI, as part of the Responsible Artificial Intelligence paradigm.
