How can agile methods keep you on track for long-term strategic goals?

Being an Amazon account manager in the ever-changing e-commerce landscape requires adaptability, customer-centricity, and effective strategies. Agile methods offer the tools to excel. They enable quick adaptation to Amazon's dynamic algorithms, iterative improvement of product listings and customer engagement, cross-functional collaboration, customer-centric approaches, and data-driven decision-making, ensuring account managers thrive amidst constant change and intense competition.

In a recent project aimed at incorporating sustainable design principles, we established a vision that aligned with our long-term strategy. We envisioned a future where our kitchen cabinets seamlessly blended aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. To maintain alignment with this vision, we employed agile methodologies. Regular sprint reviews and retrospectives ensured that our short-term goals and tasks directly contributed to our overarching vision. In each sprint, we focused on small, achievable objectives, such as optimizing material usage or enhancing energy-efficient manufacturing processes. I will add some grain of salt here. SMART goals can be rigid, which might not be suitable for all situations. While it’s important for goals to be achievable, setting highly ambitious goals can drive innovation and progress. Overemphasizing achievability might lead to mediocrity. Besides, SMART goals often focus on tangible and measurable outcomes, neglecting the emotional and inspirational aspects of goals. Emotional engagement with a goal can be a powerful motivator. Finally, emphasizing personal and professional growth can be a crucial aspect of goal setting.

In a recent project targeting improved manufacturing efficiency, we defined SMART goals. Our objective was to reduce material waste by 15% within the next six months. This goal was Specific (focused on waste reduction), Measurable (quantifying the 15% reduction), Achievable (based on our current processes), Relevant (in line with our long-term sustainability strategy), and Time-bound (with a clear six-month deadline). By integrating these SMART goals into our agile methodologies, we were able to break this overarching objective into smaller, manageable tasks for each sprint. Finally, incorporating social responsibility can add depth to goal setting, so ask yourself how does achieving my goals contribute positively to the broader world? That can provide an important “spark” to keep you moving forward.

Indeed, SMART goals act as stepping stones towards your vision. They provide clarity, focus, and motivation, enabling you to concentrate your efforts and increase your chances of achieving your vision. One key aspect to remember while setting SMART goals is the importance of flexibility. Goals should not be rigid; they should be adaptable to changing circumstances. Also, while using tools like worksheets and OKRs can be incredibly beneficial, it's equally important to regularly review and adjust your goals based on your progress and any changes in your environment or circumstances. Remember, goal setting is an ongoing activity, not a one-time event. It's about continuous learning, improvement, and growth.

All of these are great and empirical recommendations, might I add, that while SMART goals can help you lead in the right direction, use them to guide your overall/broad level vision, and leave the methods, routes, and details to your team members on how they'd like to achieve the goals. So, while the goal must remain irrevocable, the process to achieve it may be flexible.

PRETOTYPE AND TEST LIKE TESLA As innovation facilitator of 100+ projects, I like to share how Tesla interested buyers for their first car. In 2003, the founders of Tesla had an ambitious idea (an all-electric 2-door sports car). In order to convince potential buyers to order its car, Tesla created a pretotype of what the car would look like. Lotus supplied Tesla with a ‘glider’ Elise - which was filled with models of key components. This was not a prototype, because the vehicle didn’t function. Tesla was able to show buyers a close proxy for the final design. Tesla asked “Will you put down a $5,000 deposit to have it built to order? From this test Tesla secured several hundred deposits, a non-trivial result to reassure their Investors
