How can administrative assistants gain recognition for their contributions to the team?

Respectfully, keep your head down, work hard and let your work speak for itself. Sometimes it's hard to not hear praise to keep you going or a thank you. But the confidence has to come from you. You keep going and doing your best work and don't let not getting a thank you after everything you do deter you from continuing to produce great work. Be consistent in building that trust with your team, your work will literally get you the praise you deserve. Also, asking for more opportunities to be able to showcase this skill set and killing it every time is going to get you the recognition you deserve.

Being an administrative or executive assistant can sometimes seem like a thankless job but you’re literally who keeps the organization running. It can be as high-profile as liaising with a dignitary or head of state, to making binders for an important meeting, to being a proxy for your executive and making important decisions on behalf of the organization. By being flexible, approachable, trustworthy, and becoming known as someone who “gets things done”, you’ll become nearly indispensable and the go-to for all things. The ability to pivot, see the big picture, and remain calm during chaos and provide a steady hand will take you far.

This is a question I don't feel I can answer fully because I've always been someone that doesn't like the "lime-light" or have to receive recognition for a job that I enjoyed doing. I have always been an "behind the seen" type of person and if I know that I'm doing the best that I can with the tools that I have and information I've been given - I'm fine with that.

First and foremost, good bosses will always recognize your efforts. They will acknowledge your hard work, even with a thank you. Something I do is to keep track of what I've done so that I have examples to look back on during reviews and merit increase conversations. The list also serves as a great way to personally reflect on your accomplishments. I think an effective assistant can get recognition by being responsive, efficient, focused, and able to complete tasks by (or before) a deadline. Sometimes it's hard to sit back and watch others take credit for something you did, but that's the nature of the job.

Feedback for all parties involved is crucial to be succesful. After the conclusion of each project, short or long-term, the team should take a few minutes to share best and bad practices. Feedback sessions should be both ways, not only top down.

Ultimately, being a valuable and engaged team member is the key to gaining recognition as an administrative assistant. Consistently producing high-quality work and demonstrating a solid work ethic will help you gain respect and recognition. Overall, possessing effective communication skills and remaining open to feedback will substantiate a commitment to ongoing learning and development, leading to a reputation as a reliable, skilled professional who makes valuable contributions to their organizations.

Do your best work, then ask your peers and manager for feedback. Implement their feedback, when needed, and you'll develop your own style while also showing off your hard work. The goal is not to get feedback so that others are putting in the work for you; it's to strengthen your skillset.

What I mean by communicating that is the office personnel within that office need to be able to communicate to each other every day and relay messages and direct others to fill in when needed on a daily basis not just assume that a person knows what you’re thinking or what you need them to do.

Effectivement, depuis quelques années j'ai toujours favorisé la communication (et surtout la communication horizontale, loin des directives qui caractérisent la communication dite verticale). La communication réconforte les collègues au travail, les implique davantage et leur intègre dans la vie en équipe. Certes, la compétence se développe continuellement par des nouveaux apprentissages. La réussite au travail de tout adjoint administrati, est une réalisation collective. Combien avons nous besoin du sentiment d'appartenance pour une reconnaissance dans le travail.

Lean the business outside of your roles. You may work in a company that focuses on trades or tech, being an administrator you wouldn’t handle these roles directly. However, showing your knowledge of the company’s purpose and product will keep you a step ahead and you’ll align yourself with the company mission. This carries you further. Working in IP law I knew nothing about patents, soon after a bit of reading and practice I was able to assist on small scaled patent designs with the artists themselves. Making me much more knowledgeable in the field and furthering my administrative performance.

Always be open to new challenges. There is always room to improve and openly volunteering shows how eager and willing you are to challenge yourself and learn more. Sometimes I don’t even ask for more tasks, but in my free time I will take it upon myself to learn extra things or cross train myself. It definitely grabs the attention of my boss.

Your success and achievements are very important to not only you, but your current and future bosses. Always carry those close to you. Celebrate the little things too, we all have little achievements every day and those shouldn’t be overlooked just because they aren’t “award winning” achievements. There is always room on your resume for your success. Flaunt it, you deserve it.

I buy myself flowers. My team is very supportive without any prompting or nudging, so I make it a point to celebrate myself in the moment. I'd like to think it encourages everyone else to celebrate their own accomplishments too!

Advocating for yourself might be one of the most important things to remember. In my personal experience, sometimes I feel like a very small part in my company because I am “just an administrative assistant” that works under doctors and nurse practitioners. But when I take a step back and look at my job and tasks as a whole, I realize how important I am and it helps me hold myself higher. Having that confidence helps you voice your needs. You are not expendable, you are valid and important. More often than not, the company relies on you and cannot function without you.

I find that gaining recognition does nothing to contribute to the individuals success. Yes you gain recognition but to what end? To push forward in an administrative position I would suggest learning about the company and be willing to assist but not at the expense of self. Passion pay is not exercised in South Africa so work your hours and be efficient in those alloted hours. Advocate for yourself and don't be afraid to set boundaries.

Admins are the heart and soul of any team they belong to. They are the people that have a great sense of organization and knowledge of their program. The clinicians would not be able to function without strong admin people to support them. Thank you for your help always

Gain knowledge of the overall structure of the company you are employed with. By conscientiously analysing both culture and processes, you will be able to (a) be more efficient (b) identify areas where you / your employer can improve, and (c = a+b) make relevant propositions to your superior on how to render the whole company more efficient and profitable. Our role usually leads to communication with a wide range of departments and providers. Knowledge of how this network operates is thus easily accessible and a tremendous way to learn and evolve.
