Academic advisors can stay up-to-date by attending conferences, reading academic journals, participating in online forums, and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues or supervisors.

Foremost purpose of an academic advisor is to bring all round holistic support to students as they steer their journey to next level of decision making whether it is education, administration, research and development or philanthropic ventures. For this one need to involve and engage himself in continuous learning and upgrading on real time basis, as well as expanding knowledge domain, skills, and network.

Often the most accomplished professors and famous scientists are the humblest of women and men you will ever meet. Trust in them. But beware the loud and boastful types. Remember that peacocks may have beautiful feathers but they also have very small brains.

In my experience, professional associations are a good starting point but focus on just one or two. Ultimately, you will need to reach out to people who are in your broad area of expertise and ask them to be your mentors. These potential mentors can often be found at conferences and events organized by the professional associations. Read about their work and how they have differentiated themselves in your area.

I would hesitate here, just a bit. I find that a huge number of sources that trumpet trends and changes are often in a position that benefits from people feeling the impetus to learn about changes. Hire them, follow them, watch their videos, etc. Everyone in every field is susceptible to the pressures here, but I think professors may feel it the worst, afraid they are falling behind on what they know about “the real world.” So it’s easy to get pulled in to a hype train. For example, in my field, it took more than a year for most advice on social media practice circulating on the Internet (including here) to get itself up to date after the “Facebook Zero” algorithm changes in early 2018, especially from folks selling their services!

Pay attention to the news, but even more important is participating in seminar series at your university and others. Part of the way you can build such a habit is by producing research that you seek feedback over; it provides a great vehicle for simultaneously learning about what others are doing and gathering counsel for your own work. The news (and social media) can guide what you focus on, but it's very unlikely to be filled with a lot of substance.

One of the best ways to learn is by collaborating with others since you can help each other at an accelerated pace. Online seminars can be good, but they really depend. Online courses can also be good, but only if you want a lot of structure and to start at the basics on a topic.

I stay in touch with my former thesis supervisor. He regularly sends me invitations to join research presentations by doctoral students. I always clear my calendar to attend these online events. PhD candidates are great at introducing new research instruments and very willing to showcase their methodologies. Students can be the best teachers!

Creating a culture within this unit that promotes a few people a week/month to do some research and come to a meeting prepared to share new research findings takes the pressure off of individuals within the group. This culture of utilizing research findings to better inform decision making can grow into a collective effort rather than just one or two particularly inspired and motivated staff. Supervisors should create space for for staff to share thoughts, review findings and brainstorm how these findings apply to your specific institution.

I'll sidestep practical approaches and address the greater challenge for advisors: finding time to engage in research and emerging trends. Institutions of higher education have traditionally satisfied themselves with minimal professional development for advisors, using the "many hats" euphemism to disguise that disregard. We know, though, that there is no finite learning for this profession, and advising leaders have an obligation to create the space within regular work hours for advisors to grow. Work release hours are critical, so it is increasingly important that university administrations look to alleviate administrative tasks and build intentional time/space for academic advisors. It may feel like an impossible task, but it matters.

Be a "Jack of all trades", instead of a "Master of one". Learn and develop on a personal level through different mediums in moderation, rather than sticking to just one or two means. The approach not only provides a more holistic understanding of a topic, it also keeps one up-to-date with emerging trends in research, finding interesting solutions to problems in a creative way, in turn, achieving greatness! Take the example of M.S.
