In my experience, before getting my current job as a data scientist, I was heavily updating my skillset on coursera and following all the top LinkedIn pages on the latest in AI. I made sure that I was up to date on all the hype and methods that top companies are finding useful in the market. An example for me was studying as much as I can on NLP's and LLM's as generative AI was finally created back in 2022 and needed to be controlled for business use cases. I knew that If I polished up my skills in Python and learned as much as I can, I would be prepared for the current evolving market.

Networking for me was the easiest and best way I got a job. I had a connection with my volunteer track coach from high school and was able to reconnect in the middle of the summer during my sophomore year at college. We had one conversation and I happened to bring up I was looking for a job as a Data Scientist and he so happened to be looking for an intern at his own place of work. With that one reconnection, I was able to jump start my career as a Data Scientist and get my first ever internship in such a competitive market. This then allowed me to attend conventions/conferences around my area where I made plenty of other connections which pointed me in the direction of my current full-time role. All it takes is one meaningful conversation.

While it is always good to have a generic resume you can use for any job application, it's best to make custom resumes for each one or at least have an easy to edit format so that each section can have projects, work experience, or skills that seem most relevant to the current position you're looking for at any company. In the ML project field, it always helps to make your resume in LaTex.

I don't think you have to necessarily mention this inside your resume, but def. worth mentioning in interviews. It depends on the industry, of course.

Showcasing projects is key to prove that you know what you are doing and can actually do the job that is required based on the job requirements. However, one major thing to note is it's not about how many projects you can fit into your GitHub repo. It's actually about how many QUALITY projects you have in your repository. Having 2-3 top quality repos that are fully documented, proper code structure, unit tested, and made well enough for another coder to understand it is infinitely better than 10-12 quickly made projects. We were taught in school to code quickly and simply get the job done (if it runs, we submit for an A). But the workforce is nothing like school so making sure to break out of that habit with projects is the best move ahead.
