Here's how you can use empathy to resolve conflicts in sustainable design.

Amazingly we had a dialog on this just this morning. A very wise man once shared you have two ears and one mouth so listen twice as much as you speak. So more specific to Sustainable Design we often find those who are doubting have not had their concerns primarily on cost and comfort not adequately addressed. I like to share the positivity of my four pillars to reassure them that the solution that we collaboratively develop will address Sustainability, Resiliency, Transparency and Wellness. Empathy is key, we need to ask seeking and effective questions so that we understand who we are working with.

Understand what your client needs are. Respond directly to their questions, simply. Empathy means you listen, you care, you support.

Unfortunately empathy is a dwindling skill in our society. The tendency for binary thinking, along with the unwillingness for many people to even engage in real discussion on topics with someone or a group with apposing views, prevents us from a deeper understanding and ability to evolve our thinking to include a broader understanding of the whole. Therefore the skill of putting aside one’s own beliefs, dispelling judgment and truly listening to someone with a differing point of view to empathise and understand another’s perspective, is critical to not only understanding the challenges present, but also to building bridges between parties. It goes beyond celebration the commonalities to celebrating the differences.

Understanding that the easy way has been implemented for a long time, being patient while sharing your strategy of Quality over Quantity.

Active listening should be your daily task to do what you need to do better. This means that everyone has something important to say that can help you understand what is sometimes hidden between the lines. Don't judge or underestimate people based on their position or background. Do not assume that you already know how to do things; seek opinions, ask for feedback; you need a rich and rounded perspective to define effective strategies and compelling design solutions.

Active listening is not only crucial for empathetic engagement but also serves as a foundational skill in sustainable design practices. By truly understanding stakeholders' concerns and motivations, designers can create solutions that are more inclusive and resilient. This approach ensures that the final design not only meets environmental standards but also aligns with the social and economic needs of the community, fostering long-term sustainability.

Active listening involves not only focusing on what stakeholders, colleagues, and team members are saying but also understanding the underlying emotions and thoughts behind their words and responding with the goal of achieving mutual understanding. This skill is an effective way to build trust with the audience and find solutions to project challenges. When active listening is employed in interactions, the audience feels understood and valued.

I've found active listening to be such an important tool. When I approach active listening, I start by acknowledging that I don't have all of the answers and appreciate that I'm surrounded by other intelligent people with different perspectives than what I may have. This has fostered the most successful collaborations that I've been fortunate to be a part of and encouraged buy-in from the project's stakeholders.

People, in general, have become accustomed to being deceived to the point that listening and empathy aren't enough. First step is to build a report and earn trust. No one is going to tell you their thoughts, feelings and aspirations if they don't trust you.

Clear communication also requires that you communicate with everyone that needs to hear the conversation. Often, I see people miss an entire group of stakeholders when relaying information. Making sure that you know who needs to be a part of the conversation and who are the decision makers are critical parts of the dialogue.

Prendre en considération les zones de tension pré-existantes est nécessaire et la clarté des réponses apportées par les designers dans ce cadre fonde leur perception aux yeux des équipes. Pour collaborer, créer un climat favorable au dialogue et basé sur des observations pragmatiques semble être une clé.

Finding common goals is extremely challenging. It requires negotiating with various stakeholders and dedicating time to outlining a path toward a shared concept that can eventually be translated into concrete actions or solutions. Throughout this process, it is crucial to use brainstorming and collective intelligence to empower each stakeholder as a vital contributor to defining a strategic design solution. Personal egos must be left at the door.

The first step is to establish a baseline, and based on that, propose environmentally beneficial improvements that are economically viable and socially accepted; all while aligning with the client’s objectives. If the client feels well-served and it’s demonstrated that the proposal is economically feasible, many ideas can be put forward.

Sustainable design is similar to knitting fabric. It is weaving many individual threads into a whole. The resulting product, when observed broadly, has a uniform finish. Without consistency and strength of the fabric, there can be no features.

The beauty of sustainable design is that it is constantly changing and there's so much innovation and learning. It's compelling and hopeful to think that we can always do better.
