Consider asking: "What harmful practices in my field do I want to dismantle?" or "How can my career aspirations serve a greater purpose beyond personal success?" This approach could lead to more meaningful, transformative goals that ripple outward. As a business coach it’s my job to help my clients figure out what “floats their boat”. The better you are at something the more you will want to do it and the more success you will have. It also gives clues for what you need to strengthen or find other people to support you in that area. Drivers usually boil down to 3 categories - our deep desire of how we want to be relevant. Power; Money; Meaningful Contribution. All valuable - each demands a different set of actionable steps to lead success. Helping others know who they are is a powerful contribution. I like to work in meaningful contribution - being mission driven to help people gain financial independence floats my boat!

This is where I find I get the most pushback from my clients. Once they’re honest about who they are and we talk about the set of skills they need they are reluctant to actually change the way they do things and what they need to get there. If you’re going to go through this process I highly recommend that you prepare yourself to get uncomfortable with the unfamiliar and the things that you don’t do well so you can hone those skills. It’s humbling to level up to a new way of existing. Use the workplace as a learning lab, what works; what doesn’t to progress your professional game.

The mindset shift is everything! It sets you up for being able to have a different voice in your head that drives your actions. It comes from a place of what’s possible and what can be instead of old limiting beliefs. I always say if I could wave magic wand for any of my clients it would be to set aside what they know, what they think they know, so they can have a new experience and open up to what is beyond their scope of possible.
