Here's how you can tap into your network to access leadership opportunities within your organization.

Trust is very important when building a network of colleagues. Give without the caveat of receiving something in return. Friends and colleagues don't keep score.

Identify and connect with key individuals who hold influential positions. Initiating conversations with these individuals can provide insights into the organisation's existing or upcoming leadership opportunities. Leveraging mentorship and sponsorship within your network can help you gain visibility and support for your leadership aspirations. Establishing a reputation for being proactive, results-driven, and a team player can also increase your chances of being considered for leadership roles when they become available. Participating in cross-functional projects, leadership development programs, and volunteering for leadership-related initiatives expand your network within the organization.

I first identify experienced individuals within my organization. These are usually professors I have had or veterans I’ve met throughout the years. I build genuine relationships by attending networking events, collaborating on projects, and showing interest in their work. Once rapport is established, I seek their advice on career development, communicate my goals, and act on their feedback. I request introductions to other influential leaders and attend recommended networking opportunities. Keeping mentors informed about my progress, I offer help whenever possible because networking is a two-way street. Always remain persistent, patient, and proactive in this continuous process. There is a popular saying, “Your net worth is your network.”

Mentorship is a two way street! In addition don't limit to just 1 mentor. Seek out those who have skills in areas you'd like to improve.

There's no greater interview than previously working with someone. Volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door and build your resume. Remember; there's nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. By adding value you showcase your ability to support the team and instill confidence in those that may hire you in the future.

I've previously held department level meetings, and then cross department meetings based on grade level. Both are impactful in their own ways. By casting a net a mile wide and a mile deep you expand your network as much as possible.

Maintaining a netWORK, is WORK! It takes effort and energy to maintain relationships. When doing it for the right reasons it's enjoyable. It shouldn't feel like work. If you put great energy and genuinely care for others that karma will come back to you.
