My experience with solving complex problems is to follow the Six Sigma DMAIC approach. 1) DEFINE the problem with all known top level facts in perspective. What?, Where?, How frequent? Identify the critical to quality parameters (CTQs) 2) MEASURE the system Y by gathering data from various sources. Refine the data and ensure it's reliable by conducting measurement system analysis. 3) ANALYZE the data and identify causes that effect the system Y. Use fishbone diagram and carry out CNX (Controllables, Noises, Variables) analysis. Identify Xs by design of experiments if needed 4) IMPROVE by implementing the recommendations. Convert the practical problem to statistical problem to statistical solution to practical solution 5) CONTROL

Handling complexity in plant engineering requires gathering all the necessary facts surrounding the situation. After understanding these facts, you can think clearly about potential solutions, drawing from previous experiences. Then, you select the most fitting solution for the problem and implement it. It's essential to review the outcome of the solution to ensure that it has indeed produced the desired results.

The adage “There’s no such thing as a bad idea” really is true. Often corporate politics eclipse this fundamental truth, but everything is worth considering. Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes, and other times the best of the bad ideas IS the best idea.

No solo es necesario utilizar nuestra experiencia, también es necesario tener un enfoque Gemba ir donde esta el problema y apalancarse en la experiencia de los operadores en piso, quienes son los que pueden brindar otra perspectiva del problema, con lo que se puede llegar a una solución más efectiva y práctica.

Do not simply leverage your own experience, leverage that of the equipment operator that has been running the thing for the past 20 years as well as that of the grumpy curmudgeon with the gray hair that first solved your current dilemma before you were born. If it’s your experience that makes the difference, that’s great. If the equipment operator that no one has bothered to listen to has the answer, that’s also great. Give credit where credit is due, you’ll get plenty of accolades for recognizing the correct solution.

In many regards, this is the easy part. It’s what they teach us how to do in school. The important part is learning to validate your analysis. Find independent ways to arrive at an answer. Factor in the experience of others. Question and appropriately weight the validity of the data underlying your analysis. It all boils down to critical thinking. Just remember not to be too critical of others.

En mi opinion el seguimiento en el tiempo es una de las etapas más importantes en la implementación de decisiones, sin un seguimiento adecuado, es difícil asegurar que la solución se esté ejecutando según lo planeado y que esté produciendo los resultados esperados.
