Switching into software testing from other fields involves a lot of things. But invest time in learning the fundamentals required (Theory involves process related SDLC, STLC, Models, Approaches, Agile) and then learn about the tools used. Don't just learn from books!!! instead focus on viewing these concepts in real time scenarios through technical groups and technical videos & discussion groups, network with testing professionals on public platforms, start writing about it after validating the content that you write. Before jumping into software testing, there should be clarity what this field is about, what skills are required and what should be expected from this field. Even though there is stereotype that since manual testing requires no coding skill so anyone can do, it is correct but upto extent. If you are new to software testing, one should go through basic concepts like SDLC, STLC, Defect life cycle, types of testing, qa reports, etc. Also if some one is new to testing then manual testing is good option to start as through manual testing one can understand test cases, scenarios, strategies, etc. Even though there is hype of automation but without strong foundation in testing, automation won't be much useful.

My advice to anyone starting in QA is to learn a programming language right from the beginning. Python is an excellent choice, and pairing it with Playwright for automation testing provides a solid foundation. It's crucial to build a strong understanding of databases and networks. Knowing how databases work and data flows through a network helps identify issues and understand the root causes of bugs. Modern QA engineers should be proficient with version control systems, especially Git. Focus on Continuous Integration (CI) tools like Jenkins or CircleCI to automate testing. Also, familiarize yourself with issue tracking and test management tools like Jira, Zephyr, or TestRail to streamline your workflow and improve efficiency.

Once someone enters into testing they will gain experience every new day, however gaining of knowledge depends on their will that how much they are interested to upskill them and remain updated in the market. If some one is manual testing there are lot of things to learn like QA Documentation, Test Case design, Test plans, black box testing techniques, api testing, etc. If someone is in automation testing then one should start with the programming language that on which language they want to work. Python is easy for beginners but java has more resources on automation. So one should choose language that suits their skill.Once language is decided one should gain basic knowledge of language, then selenium and finally jump into framework.

Technical Skills: Develop proficiency in test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, JUnit) and version control systems (e.g., Git). Practice writing test cases and understanding how to execute them. Soft Skills: Enhance communication skills to effectively collaborate with developers and stakeholders. Attention to detail and analytical thinking are crucial for identifying and resolving bugs.

Experience is important at every level either it is senior or junior testers, while gaining experience one should always focus to have versatile experience like manual, automation, api & white box testing. It is obvious that one cannot gain all the experience at their workplace so they should look for other options also like meetups, open source project, etc. This options will give exposure in testing which can be very crucial for growth in career. Also invest time in yourself in gaining experience, one cannot gain experience without investing time & efforts.

Hands-on Projects: Start with personal projects or contribute to open-source projects to gain practical experience. This allows you to apply theoretical knowledge and build a portfolio. Internships or Freelancing: Consider internships or freelancing opportunities in software testing to gain industry experience and understand real-world challenges.

Credentials such as ISTQB's Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) can demonstrate your dedication and expertise to potential employers. Although not mandatory, they can provide you with an advantage, especially when transitioning from another field.

There is being mixed opinion going on social media regarding the certifications in testing. But at the end of day, certification helps you in having edge over other candidates in market as such certifications ensures that you have knowledge of basic testing skills. ISTQB certification can be helpful, there are several online and offline institutes which also gives certifications, but ISTQB stand apart, since it is bit costly so before applying for such certifications one should talk to their managers, as most of the companies nowadays reimburse on clearing of certifications exam. There are other options also like ASTQB but it is further more costly than ISTQB.
