Constantly practice and physically do it because the muscle memory is very important. Most of all, you have to want it and you have to be willing to go through hell if that means getting to your goal. If you are truly passionate about it, it is worth the hell.

No, you don’t need a degree in filmmaking… but a good film program could vertically educate you, give you practical training/feedback/guidance, and simultaneously build up your network, saving you a few years of slogging through random learning-on-the-job opportunities. Getting those learning-on-the-job opportunities can be easier if you know a full graduating class of people who know your talents, character and work ethic, too. Still, you can easily make 40+contacts on the crew in just one gig, so no, you don’t need a degree for building a network. You do need to study a skill, though. Production is a labor and skills-based endeavor, and you need to be prepared and willing to do the labor while being a professional on set.

Taking courses is great and you can learn a lot but I’d recommend this instead: Create a ton of videos! Make them for yourself. Make them for your friends. Nothing better than getting those reps in!

I would echo what others have said and just start creating. Create what you want to work on, if possible. Edit a few things for free. This is a challenging time in the industry. Literally no one knows what the television model is now, or will be, so not much is being made. This is the time to work on other video production projects, like in commercials or education if you have the opportunity. Those aren't going away yet.

To me, storytelling that connects is key. Don't get carried away by technical gimmicks. Also, don't not improve your tech skills because of fear. Don't get sucked into the dominant mainstream techniques. Watch films, figure out what YOU need/want your films to be like, experiment don't just get swayed by what's out there. Figure out what films YOU want to make and learn whatever it is that you need. Learning about films and who's made them, I find fascinating. It helps me figure out myself and my work. And all that "We want something new" ... is frankly, nonsense. There are so many stories that have not been told yet, from different gazes. What do you want to make? There is only one you!

I disagree - storytelling is intuitive to human nature, and therefore the fundamentals will also be the same. And 'fancy trendy editing techniques ' mean nothing if you can't tell a story. This isn't to say don't continue to learn and evolve technically and find more efficient techniques, but always remember that at the end of the day it comes down to the connection between one human and another (even if that's on mass - it's still just lots of 'individials' youre connecting with). Technology is just a tool ...so don't fall into the trap of mistaking it for the reason you're creating video)
