Many years back a leader told me that one of the best ways to demonstrate leadership to your boss is by doing his/her stuff. Since then I have modified it to "your the stuff your boss has to do but hates to do". One it will help the overall team perform better as someone has to do that task which the boss doesn't like doing. More importantly it will endear you to him/her. The flip side is you might be stuck doing such un-exciting work. This is where the second part of advice comes into play. Always be working towards making yourself "redundant". Once you do that the organisation and your boss have no option but to promote you.
