Here's how you can streamline your design workflow using artificial intelligence.

During one project, the AI tool quickly generated multiple design iterations based on the client’s requirements, significantly reducing the initial concept phase from weeks to days. ?? AI, or more specifically Generative AI, can already be a decisive factor at this point in time. In my experience working in industrial design, the biggest challenges have always been generating variations and finding inspiration. Industrial designers often draw inspiration from films, television, science fiction, art, and culture. Nowadays, AI covers all these areas as well. As a civilization, we must acknowledge that AI represents a condensed form of our creative efforts. It serves as an excellent tool for inspiration. However, the implications and overall impact of AI on our cultural and civilizational achievements are currently unforeseeable.

The best harm-free (as in, ethically responsible) use of AI is at the beginning stages of your project, as an internal exercise to bolster, or expand on the research you have already done.

Using AI to analyze large amounts of research data is to help creative people do what they do best, be creative! Its important to consider multiple view points at this stage however, as if you rely too much on AI to give you the answer without verifying, or double checking, can get you in trouble.

Concept development through AI is a natural progression; however, it is important to remember that design also involves problem-solving. Since Generative AI does not yet fully master logical thinking, the "solutions" it produces in the form of design concepts tend to be superficial and not yet truly usable. When it comes to purely visual aspects, I believe AI can certainly assist in concept creation. However, for more in-depth constructive or functional variations, AI falls short. To address these aspects effectively, we need an AI capable of logical thinking and contextual understanding. Current AI lacks the ability to critically evaluate and question concepts.

Being able to sketch an idea quickly, and feed it through AI as a "what-if" gut check is a great way to see what works and what doesn't. Using this explorative method gives us the ability to try out potentially more radical ideas that translate better into a 3d space. Alternatively, you can with most AI allow them to interpret what you give them more loosely and give yourself the chance to be surprised what it sees vs what you see.

AI as a boost for collaboration is a double-edged sword: on one hand, it's certainly beneficial for AI to support collaboration as much as possible. However, collaboration between designers isn't just about exchanging thoughts and ideas; it's also about understanding each other on an emotional level, sensing the motivation and foundation behind the ideation process, and finding a consensus. An AI acting as a middleman could disrupt this delicate balance. This is precisely why I believe that while remote workshops are convenient and practical, they can never fully replace on-site workshops.

Having an AI is in a way like every designer having their own design team to tap into. If all designers can be this productive the solutions should come thick and fast. Of course, along with learning how to use AI, a designer would also have to learn how to manage their time and their efforts so that it doesn't become a time-suck!

As of now (June 2024) We are not quite there yet where AI puts in final touches. using AI to help us review text and dialogue is one thing, but to allow AI to make the small end of project changes without review from a human hand would be foolish. That being said, creating some form of AI that helps to analyze cad data as a bit of DFM-style "spell-check" is not a bad way to go.
