However, to truly excel as an educator, it is essential to go beyond just content mastery. Integrating pedagogical techniques, cultural awareness, technological skills, and emotional intelligence enhances your ability to connect with students and facilitate a more enriching learning experience.

Ensure you have planned our your lesson providing: - differentiation - scaffolding - resources to challenge those who complete tasks early. - do research on anything you think you might not know Be prepared to go off plan sometimes as things do lot always go to plan Ensure what you plan is actively engaging and not just didactic

Finding the right balance in lesson planning is crucial. Overplanning can lead to rigid lessons that leave little room for spontaneity or student input. On the other hand, underplanning can result in disorganized and ineffective lessons. Aim for a flexible plan that covers key objectives but allows for adjustments based on student needs and classroom dynamics.

Set achievable goals for each class. Think about different ways to teach, considering how your students learn best. Always have backup plans in case things don't go as expected.

Planning gives you the confidence to be successful in class. Plan for your day, plan for your lessons, and plan for the questions you anticipate the students will ask. If you do not plan ahead you are leaving too many things outside of your control.

Lesson plan is a clear route map to teaching. It provides step-by-step instructions and guidelines to achieve learning outcomes. Planning boosts confidence and avoids last minute struggle to keep the pace of content delivery smooth and proper. You should set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound) goals, and cater for different learning styles. Planning can help you decide how you can achieve goals in stipulated time and which pedagogies, activities, digital tools, or assessment strategies will be most appropriate. It's equally important to have a Plan B for effective teaching.

The standards are an indispensable resource. What the students need to know and what needs to be taught is described in the standards. It is a great place to start to develop objectives and to design differentiated activities as you identify the various stages of learning before students obtain proficiency and/or independence with a skill.

Shift your focus from being the sole provider of knowledge to facilitating a student-centered learning environment. Encourage students to take an active role in their learning through discussions, group work, and independent research. Provide opportunities for students to explore topics of interest within the subject matter, fostering a sense of ownership and motivation. This approach not only engages students more deeply but also helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, making the learning experience more meaningful and effective.

This is the key one for me. You can hold all the knowledge in the world but without student engagement you won’t be able to sell it to them. Get to know their names, give them eye contact and make them feel they’re special. I model loads and as a music teacher it’s the most useful tool in my armoury!

Learn to read the audience. I've found this can only come from familiarity with the material and an interest in both what you're teaching and why you're teaching it to the people in front of you. Is it because they Need To Know or Want To Know?

You teach students, not a class – get to know your students, learn their names if you can and try to remember something about them - a hobby, a talent. You are not your student’s friend - you should be friendly to your student an act with kindness, fairness and equity. Interact with your students - when they are doing activities. Ask them questions, encourage and guide them. Walk around, sit with them. Listen!! Ditch the textbook as much as possible and create your own lessons and activities (or at least substitute with your own material) There is nothing more boring as a student to just do task after task from a textbook, and as a teacher there is nothing more boring either.

Think about the different ways you can engage all students. This might be through the use of individual student whiteboards, response cards, structured opportunities for turn and talk, note taking, student reflection, etc. Chunk the content in small bite sizes and give students the opportunity to actively engage with each bite size. Cognitive processing of each chunk of the learning will help to ensure that students are thinking about what you’re teaching.

In my experience, most teachers skim over rules and expectations at the beginning of the year and dive right into teaching. That doesn't work well because you won't be able to teach if your classroom management isn't in order. You'll spend most of your time handling disruptions. Instead, devote time at the beginning of the year to establish an organized classroom environment by meaningfully engaging students in setting expectations, teaching routines, and getting to know each other. Investing in this right at the beginning sets you up for a much smoother year.

Make sure you know what expectations you have before you walk into the classroom. Once there make sure you work them out together and work with your class to create classroom norms display them clearly, repeat them often and be consistent in applying them. Establish small routines that help establish relationship but also direct expectations. Am example I expect all my student to wait at the door to be invited in, ladies always first, I always greet each student with a fist pump and a comment, not because I am cool but because I want every student to hear and feel that I see them, I hear them and I value them, plus it also teaches the boys some manners and chivalry.

Managing behavior as a teacher is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment where students can thrive academically and socially. Effective behavior management helps establish clear expectations, boundaries, and routines, promoting a sense of safety and structure in the classroom. It also fosters a positive and respectful atmosphere, allowing students to focus on their studies and interact harmoniously with their peers. In my experience, being fair is another way to manage behaviour. Students are observant of how you give praises and consequences. If they feel that there is favouritism, behaviour often goes down. Establish clear routines for everyone, remind them of the classroom expectations. I have also learnt to choose my battles wisely, know when to intervene and de- escalate.

Navigating justice in the classroom is crucial for new teachers. It's about treating students with respect and fairness. Setting clear rules and consequences from day one is essential, but equally important is consistency in enforcing them. Building rapport with students is key. Understanding their backgrounds and interests can greatly aid in addressing behavioral issues. Remember, a respectful and orderly classroom benefits everyone and allows all students to flourish.

Objective assessment and self reflection are imperative for professional growth. Take time to reflect on your experience: both positive and negative. It will help you understand what went wrong and why. Instead of being disappointed with mistakes, develop a positive and resilient mindset. After identifying areas for improvement, set measurable targets and work to achieve goals. You can take feedback and also seek support and guidance from your mentors and colleagues for improving your teaching skills.

La remise en question est un moyen très efficace dans l’amélioration des pratiques pédagogiques de l’enseignant. L’auto-évaluation, l’identification des axes d’amélioration et la capitalisation sur les expériences toutes sont des actions efficaces pour améliorer son style et sa stratégie d’enseignement de séance en séance. à mon avis, l’approche est simple : 1-déterminer les actions ayant permis d’atteindre de manière efficiente le/les objectifs pédagogiques, les formaliser, les transformer en pratiques et les mobiliser de manière optimale. 2-identifier les axes de bonification, se fixer des objectifs, se former et s’auto-former, se faire accompagner, tenir un monitoring personnel puis recommencer le cycle du début par de l’auto-réflexion.

The most effective educators, and especially teachers who transition into broader roles, take self inventory. Being open to support and help is crucial in leveraging others perspectives to streamline processes and increase efficiency. These efforts will be to no avail if an individual does not apply them. While applying them consider whether these strategies create pathways or potential hazards, is this feasible and conducive , are there other resources before implementation? These questions will help to generate critical thinking, which is a key skill for our students to have in their toolbelt. We must be the first partakers.

Reflect on your emotions prior to entering the room, and the moment you leave the room. Over reflection and too much self criticism can be harmful.

Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and can significantly improve your teaching practice.

Thank God for that! It's so important to value hierarchy & get positive help if required. It's also a wonderful idea to attend workshops where you're allowed to voice your issues. Sometimes the issues raised are issues for most & healthy interaction can be of great help as discussions usually come up with solutions.

When you are a new teacher the biggest benefit you will have is being surrounded by more experienced teachers who have been through the situation you are in. Take it upon yourself to seek mentorship and support from them so you can benefit from their years of experience and apply it to your own craft. No one in the school is going to expect you to have all the answers on the first day, It takes time to learn and gain experience. So utilize those around you that do.

Watch others teach, educate, lead, tell stories, captivate an audience. Watch people show novices, children, pupils, adults, pets, and elders a new concept.

Be a sea sponge! Filter what you need and what you don’t need. Seek advice from people who are outstanding role models who have the respect of the students. Observe their interactions with all stakeholders, copy them and mould your own style based on your character and values.
