Even using social media in a wise way will help us stay informed and vigilant about the matters.

There is a thin line about networking I’d like to touch on, these days “networking” has gotten a bit out of hand. It seems to be all about the money, all about the number of followers, all about reaching a summit of success, etc. So I say to you, be authentic with yourselves and seek your passions, let them out, then go and network at events that line with such passions, and give 100% of yourselves. Don’t just network for the heck of networking, that will never work.

AI is not just reshaping industries, it is creating a new paradigm that sets humanity in a totally new direction, and you can either be part of it or be forgotten. Learn to adapt, reinvent yourself. I am 59 and I am doing exactly that.

It’s as easy as this, be a teacher, a mentor to someone. There is no greater gratification and joy than that when you help someone become better at something, and sharing your own experiences, successes and failures, but that is life. We have to be able to give back.

This is a great way to give back. And in actuality, this is the best feeling you can ever have, a feeling of satisfaction, empowerment and meaning when you mentor someone and share your knowledge, your experiences, your passions and also why not, your failures and successes, which are the ones that have molded you into who you are today.

But those who are more seasoned often have the unique concern of becoming irrelevant as their industry changes and new skills are required while at the same time wanting to leave a legacy. I would argue that continuous learning and up-skilling, networking, and even mentoring are important but not enough. While these all have value, I have found from coaching clients that some of their greatest returns come from leveraging great storytelling, strategic volunteering, and being part of boards or think tanks that shape future policies and practices in their industry.

Having an open mindset and embracing continuous learning are definitely key in staying relevant, but it is also important to adapt to our rapidly changing world and brand yourself in a more updated way: - get online and create a visible presence sharing your knowledge and personal stories of challenge and success over the years - seek out guest spots on a podcast or start your own and interview a wide variety of professionals and influencers in your niche/industry - write a book or speak at events where your expertise, experience and wisdom will be appreciated and acknowledged All of these intentional actions will keep you relevant, up to date and interacting with a wide variety of people to create the best exposure and credibility.

In addition to the strategies mentioned, consider engaging in cross-functional projects to broaden your experience and knowledge base. Stay informed about global trends and how they impact your industry. Maintain a healthy work-life balance to ensure you remain energized and motivated. Finally, stay humble and curious, as these traits will drive your ongoing growth and relevance in your field.

Become an explorer or pathfinder. The mature leader’s brain is different than those under the age of 45. Learning, growth and change happen differently. To unlock plasticity and growth later in your career: 1. Behaviour first (not mindset). 2. Explore multiple pathways or experiments. I call this “learn your way forward” 3. Continue promising experiments; swap unsuccessful experiments with yet another new one 5. Keep trialling, keep learning, keep growing. Behaviour is the #1 trigger of neuroplasticity. We aren’t young anymore, and growth is hard work. Therefore start with what actually triggers plasticity and growth. Behaviours first. When you succeed, you will re-value the action you took and mindset change will follow.
