The most important skill in my point of view is to stay open minded. It needs some time to left the normal behavior behind. Everybody wants a clear and stable situation, but if a new situation appears, it is very helpful to welcome the changes and give them a change. Have a look how the new opportunities can help you or your customer. This means that you perhaps have to learn new things, or to leave your comfort zone, but it brings always new opportunities, another new view on what is happening and sometimes new friends.

Keep up with the technological innovations and developments. 30 years scanners and OCR was new in document management while 25 years ago machine learning became the new standard heavily built upon OCR and improved computer harware. ML became popular with the new generation of IT storage devices and 64-bit systems. Today, AI shall give a new wave and a fresh look to good old ML, not just learn but proactively help and support the same document management process easing the work of millions world wide. I am eager to learn where AI takes and what is next.

Personal development is your personal investment in learning and in your future-self. The same way as starting a new role or new job is your personal investment at work. Your personal investment in learnig, creating new connections, influencing your team members and others or building a future-state of an actual process, department, or company.

After a few months as lecturer in computer science, I accepted a job as data processing coordinator to apply my IT knowledge. The firm's data processing was outsourced to a service bureau which provided monthly reports. My boss wanted to have an internal online system. I thought about a tailor developed system which was predominant in firms at that time. There was no ERP course in my university programme as it was a relatively new software product even in Europe. In one of my internships, the 'SSII' developed a 'progiciel' for retirement homes which is related to a vertical ERP solution. In fact, the online system had to be an ERP on a specific hardware platform. This is how my ERP adventure started. ERP learning is now my personal hobby.

When you get to that point, I think it's important to reflect on your contributions and how you can still positively influence the next generation. Share your knowledge and experience with younger colleagues, that is, do mentoring. If you dare, you will have the time to analyze how to improve existing processes and systems. Get involved in projects that you are passionate about, no longer out of necessity but out of pure pleasure. Set new personal goals that motivate you and give you a sense of accomplishment.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for sustaining long-term engagement and motivation in any career, including ERP. Be sure to set aside time for hobbies, family, and relaxation. A balanced lifestyle helps prevent burnout and keeps your mind sharp for addressing the complex challenges that come with ERP roles.
