As a former manager of data centers and now architecting cloud solutions, pivotal in my understanding was learning Git and deploying a simple web app locally and then to Cloud. This gave me insight into Dev workflows and how Cloud streamlines deployments. DevOps methodologies became clearer and challenged ITIL beliefs. So my advice would be to choose a language, find an interesting example, and follow it. Personally, I worked with Ghost and MySQL, running them on Docker Desktop, then Azure. There are countless examples to try. And when you do get through such an exercise, you will also understand how costs can grow rapidly, but more importantly, how you can control those costs. Cloud is like dim sum; it’s easy to consume more than you need.

One thing I have found useful when starting as a cloud engineer is to learn Infrastructure as Code on first hand. It not only gives you a broader aspect of aws services but also works as an efficient tool to manage all your cloud infrastructure in one place, this will make sure your cloud infrastructure remains consistent and prevents you from making any unknown additions on cloud platform using other techniques like UI or CLI. Examples of IaaC tools include terraform, AWS CDK CloudFormation

One thing I’ve found helpful is beginning with the architecture path. Most of the services and specializations will be related with networking, compute, storage services and this will help you a broad spectrum to begin to specialize your knowledge according to the path you project yourself in the next months or years

It is impossible to know everything about everything. When talking about technology, we can be updated in all the areas with a medium level of detail or be specialized in a particular area and have a high level of detail in that area. In the first case, even if we embrace the overall knowledge, we tend to focus on particular areas we are more interested in. Additionally, the advantage in that case is that you can enter in details in any area at any time, as you already know all/most of the areas

I've found that specializing in specific areas has truly set me apart. Early in my career, I chose to focus on cloud optimization, FinOps, and the use of Cloud Management Platform (CMP) tools. This decision opened doors to high-impact projects and positioned me as a go-to expert in my organization for cost management and efficiency. I've seen firsthand how this specialization can lead to unique opportunities, My expertise in FinOps principles has allowed me to bridge the gap between IT, finance, and business units, driving significant cost savings and operational improvements. However, I always maintain a balanced approach, keeping a broad understanding of cloud ecosystems while diving deep into cost optimization techniques and tools.

Having certifications doesn't make you a master of that skill but it definitely validates your hard work and knowledge about the domain.
