Expertise goes beyond just saying what these technologies are. Most projects need you to specialise in one of these technologies or be able to understand the QA context around the industry you’re supplying into. For technologies, show the pros & cons of each in ways that relate to the project you’re tasked with. For example, SLA is too brittle for this part or SLS nylon will not be heat resistant enough for that etc. Knowing competitors & trade names of materials goes a long way too as it opens alternative methods. For QA, prepare to reference ISO 9001 for most industries, AS:9100 for aerospace, ISO 13485 for medical & IATF 16949 for automotive. Some companies will also ask for ISO 14001 (sustainability) & 45001 (health and safety).

Building a strong network is crucial for a 3D printing consultant's success. It provides access to industry insights, technological advancements, and emerging trends. Networking with manufacturers, designers, and material suppliers can lead to valuable collaborations and business opportunities. It also helps in gaining referrals and testimonials, which are vital for establishing credibility. Don’t hideaway from offering solutions if you’re briefed with a technical drawing that lists a material that’s similar but different to your own offering. Instead present alternatives or question why your client has elected to list this material. Larger companies will likely validate multiple materials so their supply chain always has options. Sometimes you will face outdated drawings or drawings designed for other technologies. If you see low tolerances or splits in parts, it’s likely these are machined parts, if you see draft angles, these are for injection moulding. By building this context up over various projects, you will get a good idea on finding the best manufacturing options every time.

Be passionate & proud of your client’s successes; if you show true interest & dedication to their work; you will build a strong relationship & inevitably earn more work. This doesn’t always have to be about 3D printing, it could be a new project launch or a successful trial of something else. Most projects will always funnel back into 3D printing something on an assembly so don’t worry if they don’t use AM on every single components/assembly.
