I have been a fan of @patricklencioni’s work on #theidelteamplayer. I continuously evaluate my team for being humble, hungry and smart. To me it’s a quick and easy methodology to assess early potential and then keep giving challenges with increasing complexity as they keep achieving key milestones. Has been working for me so far.

Anyone who is identified as high potential and/or successor needs a well thought out development plan. I find that during talent reviews, there’s a discussion of who’s who within the organization but fail to follow through on the plan for training, experiences and project involvement. The hi-po needs to understand their situation and areas to develop. If they’re truly interested in moving forward then they’ll make it happen. We as the support, need to give them the time and space to do so. Check-ins to assess their progress and answer questions is ideal. It’ll also enforce the commitment from the organization. Ultimately, it’s a two way street to be successful; buy-in from the employee and support from the organization.

A potential leader tends to learn and re-skill him/herself. For instance, if HR team requires HR tech knowledge and expertise, then the leader starts learning and developing him/herself first and asks for other members to learn next. On the other hand, if the leader just asks members to learn, then few members will follow but cannot develop as required.
