Actually I think too often too many people specialise too early. Before you do seek lateral moves, explore, take risks and then decide? Remember as a CFO you can never know everything and need a great team, but it’s the questions you ask that are critical and the antennae that develops with experience.

First you must identify which subset of accounting you are interested in. Once you discover that you need to further develop your skill set and knowledge with relevant tools, software, courses that are applicable to your subset. For example, I am interested in forensic accounting, hence apart from my knowledge on audit and accounting, I am further aiming to refine my skills and knowledge on forensic accounting by researching and learning from new tools, courses and softwares which teach me the skills needed by a forensic accountant

As with most things in life, if you don't know where you're going, then you don't know how to get there. So start with finding what it is you're passionate about.
