Here's how you can smoothly transition to a new industry as an executive.

It is a given that you will have the executive leadership capabilities and skills needed. What you will need though is to: 1. Understand and be able to compellingly communicate your value to your new colleagues. They may not understand how an 'outsider' can be considered. As quickly as you can, pick up their language. Don't compromise your qualities though - as they are why you were hired. 4. Be consultative. Lean into being enquiring and seek to understand. 5. Prescribe only if absolutely necessary.

When switching industries get the view of the organization from the top and what your role/mission is in that organization. Each organization has its own set of "acronyms” make sure you clarify what each letter stands for before deciding on “what you think is the situation.” For example, I was asked to step in on a meeting as the newly hired Head of Human Resources. Someone said, “we must fire this person for “not having an LOA.” In HR speak, LOA means Leave of absence. I thought “why would you fire someone for NOT taking an LOA. I learned from the context of the conversation that in this group it was a “Letter of Authorization” for a specific transaction, which made more sense!

Switching to a new industry as a leader is exciting but challenging. Approach it with an open, growth-focused attitude. Your leadership, strategy and problem-solving skills are valuable assets you bring. Dedicate time to deeply understand the new industry - read publications, attend events, find mentors. Build a network in this new space by tapping existing contacts and making new ones. These connections provide vital insights. Stay flexible - don't force old methods on the new industry. Each one is unique so listen, learn and adapt accordingly. Clearly explain how your expertise benefits this new world you're entering. Be humble. You're venturing into unfamiliar territory so seek feedback from your team and mentors.

Additionally, it would help you develop strategies to apply your previous experience effectively in your new work context, identifying connection points between your previous experience and the requirements of the new role.

Industry knowledge can be learned--that shouldn't be at the top of your list as an executive. Sure, there will be a learning curve, but you have been hired because of your past experience, which includes leadership, flexibility and vision. To embody flexibility you will need to flex your growth mindset. Consider going on a listening tour then set 3, 6 and 9-month goals for your learning and leadership. Be nimble and humble in your approach. Being a "newbie" in a role or industry has its perks as you can bring a fresh perspective and approach to projects. Share with an open mind and without attachment to your ideas and you will naturally integrate into the flow of the new role.
