Here's how you can smoothly transition to a new career in the Manufacturing industry.

Building a successful career in industry requires a strategic approach and sound planning. The key steps are an in-depth study of the specifics of the industry, analysis of current trends and potential market opportunities. It is also important to establish contacts with key players in the industrial sector and develop a strategy for attracting investments and mergers/acquisitions of companies. Developing innovative approaches to managing, optimizing production processes and improving business efficiency will help you achieve success in a new field. Remember that moving into industry requires flexibility, patience and constant learning, but if done correctly, it offers great opportunities for professional growth and achievement.

One of the things I have found very helpful in industry is communication skills, and the role played by the hierarchy of the flow of information. I'll make my submission from the engineering and production backgrounds. Before equipping yourself with the technical skills, it's important to improve your communication skills and also learn to respect the systems/structures through with information flows. I have experience working with a company that doesn't have structures and the growth of the employees is very much limited. In such an industry, as an officer in charge of production and/or engineering, you ought to equip yourself with up-to-date skills and knowledge in those areas. That calls for having an open mind and learning tirelessly.

Skill Development is most important to jump into new career. Skill about the manufacturing process and machinery/Plant knowledge required.

Thirty years ago, I worked in an entry level position at an (electric) motor producer in Wisconsin. My job was running a computerized wire cutter. Often, I'd have runs of 500 or 1000 wires, so I'd have up to 30 minutes with nothing else to do. I took advantage of the spare time to work at other stations and learned every procedure, except for the armature winding machines. The wages were so low, I was forced to quit the job. But after gaining some CNC experience, I returned to the plant ten years later as a machinist at double the pay.

Over the years I've considered writing a book on manufacturing. Probably the most useful principle I've stumbled upon is the ability to fine tune a process for the minimum amount of wasted effort for the maximum return on investment of energy. Efficient rhythms reduce operator fatigue, improve productivity, and in the process, reduce errors and inconsistencies. I call this rhythm "operational cadence" that is either smooth and effortless or out of step and prone to cause flaws, irregularities, lost productivity, and operator injury. Nearly every manufacturing process can be improved, whether you're making motors, eyeglasses, fasteners, brass fittings, cardboard boxes, or packaging cheese. Take that mindset with you everywhere you go.

From my experience I think everyone's path is different and people with certain experiences/skills can transition more easily than others into manufacturing. There are many fields where you can directly transfer skills from another industry into manufacturing; accounting is a good example where most a person's experience and education can directly transfer. For professionals that don't have a skill that directly transfers I recommend identifying what you want position for and then work backwards with the education, experience or skills required to kickoff that career. I have met many colleagues that started in other industries/fields and went back to school so they could position for a career in manufacturing.
