Anyone can read articles, but demonstrating how you delivered impact for your business and colleagues is where the real value lies. Use real life examples and talk about what you did, what you learnt and how this helped grow your skills.

Always link your understanding of threats to a former situation. Remember that the interviewers are not interested in you reciting definitions like a robot .. they want to see your practical understanding of threats and how they occur in a real-world setting. Without divulging sensitive details .. show how you understand cybersecurity threats, how you have faced and what lessons you learnt along the way

For those preparing for an interview, I highly recommend showcasing the skills you’ve developed over the years. While certifications can be valuable, they don’t necessarily reflect unique knowledge. Your background and understanding can be your greatest assets for securing your desired job. During the interview, demonstrate to the interviewer that you stay updated on the latest news in your field. Highlight your hands-on experience and, of course, your technical understanding of your area of expertise. This is my recipe for anyone looking to succeed in an interview.

From my perspective, storytelling is pivotal. It’s essential to share unique experiences and the innovative ways you’ve overcome challenges. This approach not only captivates the listener but also fosters a connection, prompting further inquiry. As a candidate, your primary goal is to engage the interviewer—to make them recognize your distinct value. While technical knowledge and domain expertise are fundamental, they are enhanced by the ability to convey your story effectively.

When I'm interviewing candidates, I'm on the lookout for people who have just read the headlines in the security press, so they can make a good show of "name that data breach". Anyone can do a little research before an interview. If you name a breach, I want to dig in. I want to see that you are passionate enough to have taken the time to build an understanding of what happened, why it happened, and what it all means in a context broader than one incident. Can you think like an attacker? Can you think like a defender? Do you really understand how a chain of events comes together to make an incident - or to prevent one? Show your passion. Show your depth of knowledge. Show your ability to solve complex puzzles. Stand out from the crowd.

You need to stay updated every day because new threats are constantly emerging and hackers are becoming more sophisticated. One day it might be a basic attack, and the next, hackers are using advanced techniques to target companies and employees. Highlight how you keep up with these developments, learn new skills, and plan defenses against evolving threats. This demonstrates your awareness and readiness to tackle the dynamic nature of cybersecurity.

Always research breaches and incidents in general for your job and also to be able to talk about it in a interview is key. Also if you understand the industry being able to relate it to the company can show you understand there world.

Create a way to be unique! Show that you have the hands on experience and networks. Join local groups that you can identify through MeetUps and Eventbrite such as ISSA, ISACA, CSA, ISC2. Work to make relationships via LinkedIn with key influencers after meeting in person and not just through a cold invite. Obtain an understanding of the top technologies in the endpoint, SIEM, and firewall with demo labs and environments. Seek free training from AZURE, AWS, and GCP and get your Security+ as a minimum.

I would add to this that it's important to understand what a security vulnerability is and what security controls you can do to mitigate that vulnerability or weakness. By vulnerability. I don't mean a standard vulnerability that needs to be patched, but I mean a weakness in security infrastructure that can be exploited and then think about how you can protect against that exploit and be able to articulate that. Typically, your interviewer will assess your understanding of the underlying technologies behind various solutions. Focusing solely on specific solutions might come across as having a narrow perspective. Instead, it's more important to demonstrate a deep understanding of how different technologies can help mitigate risks in a given system design. Showcasing this broader knowledge is far more valuable than just being proficient with a specific tool. After all, every tool is ultimately a combination of different defense methods.

Do you know the topic attack types? Are you able to discuss malware vs ransomware attacks? How would you defend against zero day attacks? Prepare your answers and know that some of these problems are very complex where easy answers don't exist. We want to see that you can start with the basics for securing an environment, utilize NIST-CSF and CISecurity controls to approach a problem.

Be prepared to talk about various security measures used to protect against cyber threats. Mention the importance of firewalls, which monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. Discuss encryption, which protects data by converting it into a code to prevent unauthorized access, and the use of secure passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) to bolster security. Understanding these measures and their applications demonstrates a practical knowledge of how to safeguard systems.

One thing I have found to be immensely helpful is keeping up with the constant evolution of attack trends and how they affect the world of computing. Discussing recent trends in an interview can help showcase your understanding of such threats and your willingness to constantly learn and improve.

My suggestion to everyone is to not just focus on explaining your own understanding. Instead, look at the trends that are most relevant to the industry of your interviewer. For us at #Porsche, and especially in the automotive industry, certain trends are particularly pertinent—such as hardware security, low-level vulnerability research, and other threats that could impact car safety. Demonstrating an understanding of the specific challenges that your target industry or company faces can be incredibly valuable and set you apart as a candidate.

Understanding attack trends is a mandatory requirement and expect candidates to have read the latest Verizon DBIR, M-Trends, and CrowdStrike Global Threat reports. Understand the trends, attack methods, and recommended controls to apply.

Awareness of current attack trends is essential for cybersecurity professionals. In your interview, discuss trends such as the increasing sophistication of social engineering attacks, where attackers manipulate individuals into breaking security procedures. Mention the rise of attacks on Internet of Things (IoT) devices as more gadgets connect to the internet. Discussing these trends shows that you're not just knowledgeable about the threats of today but also anticipating the challenges of tomorrow.

It's easy to focus on the tasks completed successfully and call them out in your resume. Differentiate by showing how those tasks helped in the bigger picture, like achieving or helping maintain compliance with company standards. Instead of saying that you "maintained patch levels of Linux servers above 95%," tie it into company goals or compliance requirements like "assisted with maintaining compliance to control 6.3 in the PCI DSS 4.0 (Security Vulnerabilities are Identified and Addressed) by patching 100% of critical vulnerabilies in the Linux CDE within 30 days." It's more detailed, shows how you understand compliance requirements, and is part of your normal work already.

Explaining about attacks and detailing about the incident proves that candidate are up-to-date with cybersecurity events. But, corelating any attack incident against the requirement of regulatory standard and providing control solution, proves candidate role as a manager rather than a associate.

very CISO is well aware of a fundamental truth in our industry: compliance with regulations doesn't necessarily equate to security. In fact, the two aren't directly comparable. However, the primary objective of every business is profitability. Therefore, as cybersecurity experts, it's crucial for us to demonstrate during interviews that we understand the needs of the company or industry and integrate them into our security solutions. By aligning our strategies with the business's goals, we can effectively protect its interests while contributing to its overall success.

You have to perform research prior to your interview to understand the industry, applicable regulations, and the impacts of these regulations. Be prepared to go into depth showing that you did more than scan a quick article. Spend time to understand differences between suggested frameworks and mandatory regulations.

Understanding cybersecurity regulations and standards is critical. In an interview, speak about relevant laws and standards such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, which impacts data protection and privacy, or the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) that governs credit card security. Discussing how you stay compliant with these regulations indicates your awareness of the legal aspects of cybersecurity and your commitment to maintaining best practices in data protection.

As a new hire, The candidate should be able to explain the IR plans throughout the lifecycle based on the renowned cyber security frameworks. A clear understanding of TTPs used by adversaries makes the security analyst build the proper IR plan. so the ideal candidate should be a very good storyteller by correlating the attack patterns throughout the attacking phase. I'll ask about the past experience in handling the incidents.

As a new hire to the organization, we would want to understand your documentation skills. Most IR plans fail due to lack of updated documentation and any procedures that new hires can provide are greatly appreciated. Both NIST and SANS have recommended IR steps to follow, understand how your role would directly contribute to each of the steps. Highlight if you have any experience in creating policies and procedures in the past.

Incident response has been most of my career. I recommend focusing on understanding the NIST cybersecurity framework and what the cycle is and responding to an incident. In an entry-level interview. I do not ask to go into detail but just a fundamental understanding of the process.

Being prepared to respond to an incident not only demonstrates readiness to take action during a cyber attack but also highlights the importance of continuous improvement in security defenses. By understanding the current cybersecurity threats, such as ransomware, phishing attacks, and advanced persistent threats (APTs), and having a solid incident response plan.

These laws form the foundation of our actions and are a central component of a sustainable and responsible cybersecurity strategy. Therefore, it is important to understand and apply these legal frameworks to act successfully and credibly in the long term.

People are doing some interesting research into attacks against GenAI in business environments. Data poisoning for instance is something that is pretty cutting edge that would be great to bring up.
