I have been a Sailing volunteer with the Veterans Summer Sports Clinic for 10 years now. It is an adaptive sports program for veterans with disabilities. May it be PTSD, cancer, blind, amputee, etc. I have never worked in this type of setting before. I had also never sailed beforehand. At the beginning I was a volunteer, but in another way also a participant. With adaptive sports there is a medical team that provides specialized equipment to comfort a veteran. Depending on their disability. Volunteers do help with assisting a veteran, so we have to learn the use of any and all equipment. Hand radios are provided as part of logistics. The sailing coaches all have a volunteer assigned to them. It is a very on the alert environment.
