In the rush to commercialize user experience design, it’s important to remember that user-centered design isn’t just based on collaboration and feedback. Ethnographic approaches to user research exist that can address unspoken user needs, and problem-solving using design can address problems users didn’t know they had (what users do, not just what they say). Testing can confirm approaches, not just inform them, if you are familiar with human factors from psychology. This may be less obvious to employers who value collaboration, but design as a craft needs capable independent contributors in the workplace to advance rational ideas and advocate for users beyond “the process.” Humans have a lot in common, and inclusive designs are universal.
