Showcase data warehousing expertise in an interview by discussing fundamentals, real-world experience, technical skills, integration, performance optimization, data quality, scalability, security, problem-solving, communication, learning, collaboration, business alignment, and providing case studies.

Interviews are time bound discussions and in my opinion one can try to showcase below traits for DW expertise: 1. For given scenario, discuss what schema design will be best suited with pros & cons 2. Discuss how you'll create ETL pipelines for data ingestion and transformation 3. Discuss scaling requirements of the architecture proposed 4. Discuss how you'll maintain data quality throughout the process to make sure the data landing in DW is upto the mark and usable (very important!) 5. Seek information about upstream and downstream systems for the DW system in discussion, brainstorm how you'll make sure these are well integrated and help business receive great data insights 6. Make sure the architecture is adhering to business needs

Core and advanced skill to create, manage data warehouse is very important. Should possess database design knowledge to implement snowflake, Star schema. SQL/ NoSql/Inmemory/Graph database architecture knowledge should be there. Required Database and SQL optimization knowledge. Needed in-depth pros and cons of different warehouses which is always be helpful to take the decisions. Always should be updated on new technology in the industry. Always eager to learn new things and should have the mentality to invest in knowledge. Highly proficient in Datamodelling skill is required. Should always get new ideas to automate the daily routine jobs which helps team to reduce human error.

The design principles help you how design the structure of the data warehousein several aspects: > Data modeling can use abstraction and encapsulation to define relation, entities and concepts and how connect them. > Data pipeline use a microservice or layer approach to organize and coordinate the processes. > Resource infraestructure based in the context of edge computing or cloud distributed computing. The right balance is the name of the game!

In der Praxis ist das Core-DWH oft in normalisierter Form und darauf aufbauende Marts, für die schnelle Abfrage, in denormalisierter Form. Bei der Skalierung ist es wichtig zwischen der technischen Skalierung und der architekturtechnischen Skalierung (modulares Design, etc.) zu unterscheiden.

Talking about different design principles is important and demonstrates the dept of knowledge of the candidate. The interviewer should also keep some time to assess these concepts and ensure the candidates fundamentals are strong and he/she can take design decisions based on the requirements and use case.

1. Avoid using select *; Sub queries/select statement should only contain the columns which are required in the processing 2. Indexing should be proper. Make sure you are choosing the right primary index, which not only helps in even distribution of data across disks but also speeds up data retrieval. If at all, there are columns which are frequently used in clauses or joins and are not part of PI, then those should be considered for secondary indexes; Also make sure, in case of composite primary index, all the columns of primary index, should be included in joining conditions. 3. Avoid skewness on disk by choosing the right primary keys/indexes. 4. Using temporary/intermediate tables for larger sub queries to decrease spool usage.

Monitor data growth and complexity of queries over a period of time and continue to tune your DWH queries. Use monitors to alert long running queries, use explain plan to figure out bottlenecks and resolve them from time to time. The issues manifest over time due to data growth and new complex ETL logics being pushed

Data governance is very important in managing security within a data warehouse, and is used to determine who can access the data and how it is accessed. This includes setting internal policies for who can access which type of data. For example, an organization may want to create a policy where employees within a sales team should not be able to see each other's customer data to ensure fairness. Moreover, organizations may want to set strict data policies around sensitive personal information such as user credit card information. One method when working with sensitive information is to implement data masking, which ensures only partial information is shown. For example, only the last 4 characters for a credit card column are shown.

In general my approach is to use real-world scenarios as my answer and to weave in all the other things like design principles, P&T etc into the example. Its far easier to talk about an example of building a dashboard centric warehouse solution and why you chose a certain data model in order to optimize for certain use cases . I begin from the assumption that an interviewer wants to know WIFM (What Is In It For Me/Company) so my job is to link as quickly as I can what I have done to a problem they are experiencing and demonstrate on how my experience translates to them solving their problem quicker and more efficiently than another candidate. Choose the things to highlight based on what you know about your interviewers company. Good Luck!

In the real world, one must carefully access the business requirements before architecting a data warehousing solution. If one is working with lots of unstructured data, then a relational data warehouse is not going to work very well. Moreover, one should consider the size of data within an organization when choosing an enterprise data warehouse vendor. For example, not all organizations need a data lake, and an open-source database like MySQL may work just fine given their requirements.

In my experience, there is no better tool that will help you to shine a light on your professional knowledge and expertise, rather than taking an example of your past project and dissecting it from start to finish, starting from design/data modeling, continuing to the development of the data pipelines and ending with the deployment of the whole solution into production environment.

Taking stock of your real life projects should be a cornerstone for any job role not just limited to data handling. Get into the habit of logging your key projects: * Summarise what the objective * a code script that effectively demonstrate the problem solving journey (if feasible) * a few bullet points on 1) what went well 2) what you'd do differently * a summary on whether the project delivered (or quantify what it delivered or difference it made) Doing this for yourself not only demonstrates a continuous improvement mindset (which good companies value), ensures you are developing your skills and is common sense for providing justification for appraisals/PDPs or paving the conversation for pay reviews.

Problem-Solving: Describe instances where you identified and resolved performance bottlenecks or data quality issues. You should talk about your past projects. Mention the scale, complexity, and outcomes. Share stories where you solved tough problems or improved performance. Share how you approach common data warehousing challenges, like handling large volumes of data, ensuring data quality, and optimizing query performance. You can also highlight how you’ve worked with other teams (like data scientists, analysts, or business stakeholders) to gather requirements and deliver solutions that meet business needs.

The points mentioned above are all correct, but I think it is fundamentally wrong to view data warehouse projects in purely technical terms. The recipients of the information from a DWH are usually the various departments in the company. The DWH initiative and architecture should be tailored to their requirements. DWH initiatives should therefore start with the requirements of the respective departments and be developed from there.

Today Customers are moving towards Embedded Analytics and Virtual Data warehouses, which reduces the complexities associated with a conventional Data Warehouse. There still could be use cases for a Data Warehouse in the Landscape but is definitely thinning. Customers will have second thoughts on implementing a Data Warehouse or even would want to Sun Set an existing one from the Landscape with use cases and needs changing rapidly and drastically.

People will remember stories long after your interview. Being able to tell a fun relatable story will keep you in the hiring manager’s mind and set you a part from the herd. Be able to deliver 2-3 stories of you accomplishments which are fun and relatable. Data integration, performance and scalability , and Data quality/governance are always good. The STARS framework is good but can be a bit boring so test drive your stories with your wife and kids.

In today's interviews, it is crucial to bridge the gap between business and technology. Discussing tools alone is insufficient; providing a business context demonstrates the depth of your knowledge. To communicate effectively, candidates should deeply consider how data warehousing solutions impact business operations and develop a thorough understanding of these effects.
