Here's how you can shape AR experiences using feedback from users.

As helpful as user surveys maybe regarding any experience, you only actually understand the pain points or the requirements when you are the user. This adds a layer of empathy, so to speak, which helps one understand the shortfalls of an AR experience, or lays seeds of ideas that you could improve upon. Of course, collecting various interaction data and analysis of that data also helps determine where we could improve the experience. It could be something small like adding sfx, or even something like adding new features that you didn’t think you need earlier.

Open the Feedback Channels: Multiple avenues are key! In-app forms, social media, and even email – make it easy for users to be your AR feedback heroes! Unleash the Feedback Frenzy: Encourage users to report bugs, suggest features, and tell you all about their AR journey. What do they love? What can be improved?

To complement feedback collection, consider conducting interviews or focus groups with selected users. These direct interactions offer deep qualitative insights, capturing nuances that online forms may miss. Additionally, analyze in-app engagement metrics such as retention rates and usage patterns to better understand user behavior over time.

Feedback is pivotal to a responsive design project or prototype; the same can be said with AR experiences. A perfect example of feedback in AR experiences would be to record data on each user's experience. How do they react to the experience? Are certain AR elements easy to find in the experience? You could also try surveys and ask each user what they like about the experience, what they don't like and how the experience can be refined.

I would like to complement the text with new insights after collecting feedback. In addition to identifying patterns and common themes in feedback, it's crucial to consider the variety of users and their specific needs. Some suggestions include conducting more frequent usability tests and involving representative users from the outset to ensure that added functionalities truly enhance the AR experience.

Listen Carefully: Pay attention to what users say about their experiences. Identify Patterns: Look for recurring themes or issues in the feedback. Understand Needs: Gain insights into what users expect and desire from the AR experience. Evaluate Impact: Assess how feedback aligns with project goals and user expectations. Iterate Thoughtfully: Make informed adjustments to improve the AR experience based on feedback analysis.

Implement Iteratively: Make small, incremental changes based on user feedback. Prioritize Usability: Focus on improving how users interact and navigate within the AR environment. Test and Refine: Continuously test prototypes with users to refine and validate changes. Address Pain Points: Target specific areas highlighted by users for improvement. Communicate Updates: Keep users informed about changes made based on their feedback to foster transparency and trust.

When user testing for AR, keep in mind how the user holds the phone, what degrees of freedom are they moving the phone in, what degrees are THEY rotating in, what artefacts in your AR experience are hidden and not explored by the user. If the experience has sound or haptic cues, does it have an obvious affordance? All of these can only come into the picture if you observe a person interact with your prototypes in realtime, which is extremely different from recalled experience feedback. What people do and what people say are very different things, and design exists in this very nuance.

Engage Users Actively: Involve users early and often to understand their needs and experiences. Observe Behavior: Watch how users interact with the AR system to identify pain points and preferences. Collect Feedback: Gather insights through surveys, interviews, and direct observations. Iterate Designs: Make iterative improvements based on user feedback to enhance usability. With a clear understanding of what works and what doesn't, you can begin implementing changes into your AR application. Focus on updates that will significantly enhance the user experience, and consider rolling them out in stages if needed. This staggered approach allows for manageable updates and helps mitigate potential risks. Ensure each update undergoes thorough testing to prevent new issues from emerging and detracting from the user experience.
