In my experience one of the main contributing factors to low motivation is unclear goals, it’s hard to hit a target you cannot see. The question then becomes “whose goals are they”? Goals that are imposed on people become the someone else’s goals not theirs. Be honest about what your capabilities and aim for what’s possible not what’s easy. One thing which I found helpful in building a transparent and effective communication with my manager is to have a clear mindset to achieve the goal of any project and align it with the Company's mindset without letting any personal bias affect the same. A professional approach will any day win over a manager/leader who understands healthy disagreements, welcome new ideas and is always ready to guide you.

Everyone you interact with has their own perspective, this is what makes us humans interesting :) Taking that as a backdrop, and if you need something a touch formulaic, one approach I recommend is the 'ol "Who, What, When, Where & Why" approach. It may sound silly, but it will align you and your manager through discussion. Let's say your manager has an expectation that you are going to deliver on a marketing campaign... Having a simple conversation around the above questioning prompts will allow you both to have a conversation as to how you both see the work.
