Here's how you can set and achieve team goals through Executive Coaching.

Using coaching to set team goals is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we want to have our team own the goals. On the other hand, we rarely can invite thinking on a white canvas. I usually introduce the metaphor of swim lanes. In any organization, there are certain things that *must* happen, but there might even be many things that have to happen in a certain way. Cascaded goals are one example. Process documentation is another example. If I'm a leader with coaching skills, I will first have to articulate the boundaries of our exploration. Then I give them a safe area to ideate and set goals. It builds intrinsic motivation fast!

What gets measured gets managed. And what gets managed gets done. I often see well-meaning teams put together a list of goals for the quarter and continue business as usual up until the last week of the quarter where they realize, they are tracking behind. How do you prevent this? Every goal needs to be quantified. I prefer to break this down into quantifiable inputs (aka what needs to be done to hit our target outcomes). From there, make sure each input has a clear owner. This should be one person, not multiple, and not an entire division. Also, make sure to set up check-in meetings. I like to have one of these every 2 weeks so everyone can give an update and we can funnel support where needed to stay on track.
