Things that will play in are your skill level, what you do for a living, and where you live. I am not sure I fully agree with this. Most companies have some semblance of an annual review. From my perspective, the most successful method of getting a solid raise are to frequently share your successes, and share your expectation for a raise a month or two before that review. When the review happens, make sure to provide a detailed list of major accomplishments over the last year. By the same token, if you are offered a promotion, make sure you ask how much the raise will be. It's a fairly common occurrence in today's workforce to be offered a dry promotion, which means more responsibility with no more money.

While this is a viable option, my personal experience is that companies don't frequently offer additional vacation time or flexibility and fall back on the perception of fairness to other employees.
