Helping even with administrative tasks such as sending out thank you letters will allow you to see how fundraising professionals approach their funders and help hone your fundraising skills. Also, if you click very well with someone, you could ask them to be a mentor and help guide you in your career.

One thing I’ve seen work really well and did myself was to start as a volunteer. Organization’s looks for a variety of volunteers who can help with administration, events, fundraising or other tasks. Volunteering is a great way to become familiar with nonprofits and different types of organizations to learn more about your own interests and types of positions that you’d be a good fit for.
