1 Secure Wi-Fi

Your Wi-Fi network is the backbone of your IoT infrastructure, making it a prime target for attacks. To safeguard it, start by changing default passwords and implementing strong, unique credentials. Enable network encryption using Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) or the newer WPA3 standard to ensure data transmitted over your network is secure. Regularly updating your router's firmware can also patch vulnerabilities, and setting up a guest network for IoT devices separates them from your main business network, reducing the risk of cross-contamination should a device be compromised.

In a previous role, I was tasked with securing the WiFi network for a small company. The office had a single wireless router serving about 20 employees. Here is the key step we took to secure the network: Changing Default Settings: Log in to the router's administration interface and change the default username and password. This is a critical step to prevent unauthorized access by anyone who might know the default credentials. By implementing this measure, we significantly strengthened the security of the WiFi network with ease in a couple of minutes, ensuring that the company's sensitive data and communications remained protected from unauthorized access and potential threats.

An important item to consider with training employees is to remember that you don't have to be the one to do this aspect. Find a WHO in your organization who can take on the task. We started a committee to tackle on our written IT protocols and it was fantastic. They are also in charge of an annual training on these topics. You can also purchase 3rd party apps and programs that can help with the ongoing training. Make sure you have the right people leading the charge on this one because it is vital!

In the event of a cyberattack or system failure, backups can be your lifeline, allowing you to restore critical data and maintain business continuity. Hire great help, most of the time it's cheaper and better to have a firm audit and manage. The security environment is changing quickly, and it's usually not at the core of what makes a business valuable.
