??Today, the North Carolina Local News Lab Fund announced $535,000 in new grants to 31 local news and community organizations. On the heels of Hurricane Helene and days before early voting begins in North Carolina, we’re sharing expanded support for organizations in Western NC, along with a statewide network of trusted communicators. This latest round of grants will provide grant recipients with flexible funding to best meet their communities’ needs, from providing life-saving information during the emergency response to helping people across the state navigate their local elections. A quarter of the organizations awarded in this grant cycle are based in or have a local reporter in Western North Carolina. We’re proud to support trusted communicators across the state who drive understanding and share essential information in this moment and beyond. ??Congratulations to North Carolina news organizations that received funding today from Press Forward’s Open Call on Closing Local Coverage Gaps: Border Belt Independent, Carolina Public Press, Down in the County, Hola Carolina, JMPRO Community Media, North Carolina Health News, QCity Metro, Qnotes, and Shoresides. These NC newsrooms are some of the 205 grantees nationwide that are connecting their communities with the information they need to thrive. As the home of Press Forward North Carolina and Press Forward Charlotte, we’re proud to be a part of a national coalition of funders and donors committed to strengthening our democracy and transforming the local news landscape. Learn more about Press Forward’s 205 grantees in the post below and join us in congratulating grantees in the comments.
CONGRATS - We’re thrilled to share the 205 local newsrooms that are receiving a combined $20 million today from #PressForward! From newsrooms focused on people of color and linguistically diverse communities to others covering vast rural areas where they are the only news source for miles - these local journalists are filling the gaps where traditional coverage has fallen short. We were so thrilled by the extraordinary proposals—more than 900—that we doubled our initial plan and are supporting twice as many local newsrooms as expected. Americans are stepping up to write a new story for local news. ?? Join us in supporting local newsrooms across the country: Donate to Press Forward's Pooled Fund today, and every dollar up to $5 million will be matched to support local newsrooms across the U.S. Learn more at pressforward.news/grantees.

?? Our grant partner Enlace Latino NC recently announced their participation as a local member of the newly launched Latino Media Consortium. The Consortium aims to “empower more Latino voters and communities with reliable, culturally relevant news and information.”
With 61 days until a critical election, we are proud to introduce The Latino Media Consortium —?an important step toward empowering more Latino voters and communities with reliable, culturally relevant news and information. The Latino Media Consortium brings together nine independent media operators working to strengthen the Latino media ecosystem for the nation's 64 million Latinos, who, in just six short years, will grow to 72 million. The time to invest in Latino independent media is now. WHO WE ARE ?Latino Media Consortium members are independent publishers serving diverse Latino audiences nationally and locally, in English, Spanish, or both. ?Despite limited resources, Latino Media Consortium publishers grew their digital U.S. reach by 48% last year, now serving over 1.4 million people. ?The consortium is now working to raise $100 million over five years to support an entire ecosystem of independent Latino media operators. WHY THE URGENCY? ?Latino voters are expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming presidential, congressional, state, and local elections. With Latinos projected to account for nearly 15% of eligible voters in November 2024, up from 13.3% in 2020, their impact continues to grow. ?The Latino Media Consortium's efforts to provide reliable information are crucial, as polls show many Latino voters do not feel well-informed about candidates' policy proposals. ?By expanding Latino media infrastructure, the consortium can help address this information gap and empower Latino voters to make informed decisions. ??To learn more about Latino Media Consortium goals and investment opportunities, visit wearelatinomedia.org.
