With a risk of repeating myself: "Risk = Threat ? Vulnerability ? Consequences" By using this formula, IT managers can quantify and prioritize risks. Essentially, risk assessment enables you to stay one step ahead by: 1. Identifying which assets are most critical and what threats they face. 2. Evaluating how exposed these assets are to potential threats. 3. Estimating the potential impact of an incident on operations and the organization. 4. Implementing controls to mitigate identified risks. 5. Monitoring the effectiveness of these controls and updating them as the threat landscape evolves.

When I think about risk assessment, I like to remind people that this isn't a one time activity. This is a process that needs to be part of company culture and needs to be occurring very regularly. Just like a disaster recovery plan, risk assessments need to be ongoing and 'live' to ensure that new threats are analyzed and reviewed as real time as possible.

To properly move ahead with efforts of cyber security, you need to understand or re-examine (depends on where you are in the your journey) the business landscape specially: 1. Risk profile: What category of the risk are you most vulnerable to, remember you are required to prioritize; by rating liklihood and business impact, is it skillset adueqacy? or service availability issues? Logical Attacks? Un authroized actions? Data-related issues like leak, disclosure? 2. Threat Level: How appealing is your processes, data to external entities specially bad actors. 3. Security-related Issues or Incident. 4. Enforced Compliance Requirement. Business aduqate security is the goal, dont be alarmist, you dont want to be the guy who cries wolf.

Performing a thorough risk assessment is essential for a proactive approach to cybersecurity. It's like having a detailed terrain map before planning a trip: it helps you identify critical points and direct resources effectively to protect your most important assets. It is also important to seek updates from large cyber solution providers to implement in your infrastructure.

Creating and maintaining IT security policies is not enough. It is important to make sure that: 1 - The team is continuously trained so IT Sec is a common understanding. 2 - Make sure employees sees the value of the policies and understands why they are enforced. Foster IT Security mindset. 3 - Continuously monitor the implementation, results and deviation of the policies. Update them as needed. Have conversations with individuals involved in deviations and educate them. 4 - Make sure that policies & procedures are audited and that results are shared within the organization. 5 - Invest on relevant tools that will bring value to the team, with focus to automation. 6 - Have exception processes in place, so deviations can be treated nicely

I think the right word here is update, keep your Operating system updated, end point protection updated.. updates typically refer to minor adjustment in the way software react. While upgrade refer to major enhancement, Its good to update windows with latest security updates, may be its not wise to upgrade your operating system to latest version (like from windows 10 to 11).. and the reason revolves around technology adoption strategy that you follow. Typically businesses does not want to be "Pioneer of the Uncharted" and have their operational team the early adopter and first one to face issues.. typically Current - 1 is a safe place to be unless ambiguous time given to new technology.

Proactive monitoring is not a novel concept in many areas of our lives. Think back to the canary in the coal mine or even more recently to your car warning you about tire pressure. Storing and reviewing the data collected from your systems is the crux of the issue. There must be sufficient analytical systems upfront which help sort through the muddle of data received. Having the data does nothing to protect you unless you 'operationalize' the information. For example to help build baseline so you can flag 'out of character' behaviour, maybe there is a large increase in the connections or a slow increase in memory to be investigated.
