Prioritizing safety in manufacturing requires: 1. Establishing a robust health and safety policy for your organization. 2. Developing a routine proactive plant maintenance plan and monitoring strategy. 3. Developing a detailed training plan to cover every aspect of operation- A robust induction process must be in place for visitors and new employees. 4. Manufacturing processes/procedures must be developed and communicated with all employees. 5. Risk assessment must be conducted and communicated with all employees. 6. Emergency response and Fire Safety procedures must be developed and communicated. 7. Competent supervision must be available for daily operations and daily process briefing. 8. A robust LOTO system must be in place.

This has to become the responsibility of everyone. Typically I have started by making it the responsibility of the shop supervisors. Train them, so they know what to look for. Make it regular (weekly, if not daily) for them to walk together through every area of operation. Correct major issues immediately of course, but show tenacity and follow-thru to correct all issues. The full team will notice and begin to self-correct and police each other to ensure compliance. It should become a part of the culture, and not a punitive thing. We appreciate and care for our coworkers, and want everyone to go work safely each day!

In order to achieve team safety in the manufacturing area, risk assessments should be carried out, safety protocols implemented and enforced, comprehensive training given and necessary Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) provided. Additionally, equipments must be regularly maintained, a culture of putting safety first promoted, emergency drills conducted, and observance of safety rules maintained. It is also important for all employees to report any unsafe situations and acknowledge adherence to safety measures.

Often, it is argued that training is unnecessary because the employee in question had many years of experience with the given work. Its completely baseless argument, situations are not always remains constant at workplace. Every movement in workplace is important and needs a presence of mind. Without periodic safety training, work becomes routine, alertness dulls and a relaxed attitude replaces caution that workers once had when the job was new. Safety training helps workers learn how to safely do a job and provides information to help them understand what they should or should not do.
